C7 Possible Air Conditioner Problems........Help Please

    A/C compressor howl/whine....normal?

A/C Compressor howl/whine normal?

OK, with the latest cooling season upon us I recently noticed a obnoxiously loud howl/whine noise which apparently is coming from the compressor, or at least related to the A/C system. I started hearing this noise at low rpm when I first started using the A/C several weeks ago, after not using it during the winter at all. At highway speeds I can't hear it I assume because of wind noise, but it is very obvious at idle or in the lower gears when I engage the A/C.

I don't recall any noise like this the last two summers at all. Maybe it was there but I really didn't notice it. Anybody else having this issue? Is it normal, or does it sound like an abnormal sound which should be addressed by the dealer.

If you are at all like I am, you are reluctant to go see your local dealer if it is at all possible. That is why I am starting this inquiry with you guys who are really the knowledge base I trust more than the local dealer.

Any comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No idea what it could be. Its good to check to see if any forum members can help but its a shame you are reluctant to see your dealer. My dealer would be my first call.

I suggest you use your phone and video tape it capturing the 'howl' so that you can easily demonstrate it to your dealer. My first guess would be a pulley idler FWIW.

I do know that the electric fan has a whine to it that is pretty distinct.

And if traced to a pulley, we know have a TSB on at least 450 recently-manufactured Z06's -- as well as some other GM products.

Hearing the noise when you engage the A/C sound like a problem with the compressor's clutch. The electric fan doesn't necessarily turn on immediately upon compressor engagement. As suggested, take a video with your cell phone to show the service writer, and visit your local dealer. Howling is not normal.

Mine has made a 'droning' type sound noticeable at lower RPMs when AC is on. Multiple times I mentioned to dealer and multiple times they advise it is a 'normal' trait of the system and everything is working 'as designed' and all components are up to date with any known TSBs. It is annoying... sounds like my 2009 Pontiac G8.. but it has 127k miles on it so it gets a bit of a pass.
