    '18 C7's to Get 10 A & 500 HP

    That would be terrific news.

I have learned "Tadgespeak" and Harlanspeak." They honestly answer questions at that moment in time. So when asked twice each earlier whether the 10A would fit into a 2017 C7, they answered "no." They were correct and honest, for like all GM employees, Tadge and Harlan want to keep their jobs by not "commenting of potential product."

I was surprisingly able confirm that around that earlier time the 10A was longer than the A6/A8's when, in the middle of Wyoming last July at a small motel the person we coincidentally parked next to/had dinner with, was the Quality Control Engineer at the transmission plant making 7,500,000, 10A's for GM and Ford, when he said, "the 10A transmission is 2" longer than the A6/A8's."

However, in the March issue of Car and Driver states, referring to the A10 in the 2017 ZL1,

For this to now be true, but not true when Tadge and Harlan said it would not fit would last year, would require the latest A10 case/adjacent parts to have been recently re-designed and made shorter.

If the 2018 C7 thus comes with an A10 which is not only faster, but also more fuel efficient than the A8, then GM could easily up the 2018 StingRay's and GS's 500 HP, maybe even 525, and still maintain the same fuel economy.

Of course this thesis is all conjecture based on Car and Driver either getting someone at GM (or the non-GM transmission plant) to inadvertently speak about the latest version of the A10 or they are plain wrong.

But what could better to amp up 2018 StingRay and GS sales than having a 10A with 500+ HP?" -- for we all know that GM's typical path is to periodically build in major product upgrades during a Corvette generation to shore up or boost mid-gen sales. Might we also get some some styling changes too -- such as a hood change and a standard, build-in diffuser or similar. If so, we would have a C7 mid-gen "refresh."

Only 74 days until the NCM BASH when we know what on the 2018 Corvettes will be changed?

A 10 speed would be just the performance upgrade the car needs! WISH mine had it (if it will handle the added hp)! Will keep the 500hp engine in the optimum output zone! Another nail in the standard transmission coffin..

While it is probably true that the manual tranies days are numbered, there are still quite a few of us that still prefer it for the driving experience that it offers. I'm sure glad that I own a couple of those cars!!

I'd love 500hp, and I prefer automatics. That being said, from a driving experience perspective, why would anyone want 10 gears? I understand the fuel benefits...but honestly, the A8 already has two or three more gears than I need. It was a learning curve for me to get used to paddle shift eight gears that are so close together. I can't imagine having two more.

Remember the 3 speed then the 4 then the 5 then etc etc???? Keep the RPM's in the peak tq band -------there you go!

A 2" longer transmission case by itself does not rule out the A10. All it would need is a 2" shorter torque tube assembly. I'm sure either is readily feasible from an engineering stance. It would boil down to which is more cost-effective.

This may sound stupid , but where are they getting that the LT1 is jumping up to 500+ hp?

I do remember, and it's easier with fewer gears. With a 3 or 4 speed, if you need to downshift to raise RPMs, you drop down one gear. With the A8 you might need to drop down two.

You .are right . Optimum RPM/Torque range make the more gears reasonable. But with 500hp or in my case arround 600hp just on two rear wheels, you end up in smoke with optimum torque/rpm Lol. So I think its more a marketing gag, than a real improvment. Because it's there, it has to be built in , to be at least up to the latest
    Development in GM's family.

You should easily get 500hp with intake / filter modification and another engine mapping. Now the LT1 is out for a while. They schould exactly know where that hidden hp's are to be found..

My understanding is that the LT4-powered Z06 and the lesser LT1-powered C7s all have the same airbox and airfilter.

So, the LT-1 airbox/filter can already flow more air than a 650 HP engine needs.

John, is this an announcement based on some insider information, or just speculation based on the quote from Car and Driver?

Just based on Car and Driver's explicit comment.

Although the A8 out performs the M7, I chose to remain a manual guy. The reasons are many, least of which is control over AFM (AFM only engages in ECO mode with M7). BUT, If the 10A can eliminate the "always On" AFM with taller gears (or other means), I may just have to consider converting!
