Corvette SUV Coming?

Maybe this will become part of the Corvette line, A Corvette SUV. According to "Maximum Bob," (Bob Lutz), this is what is needed, and it would be a big hit if priced right, taking away a good number of Porsche SUV sales. Might it look something like this?

Since the first Jeep sport utility appeared in 1984, the automotive landscape has been transformed by high-riding, five-door SUVs with visibility and utility to spare. Nearly every performance badge wants a piece of the lucrative ute market.

Notably absent is the Corvette, America’s V-8-powered workingman’s superhero.

ZR1 To Reveal Active Aero Package?

GM just filed for a patent on an active Corvette aerodynamic package. And the ZR1's reveal was delayed a few months. Are the two connected? Or, is this the BASH's special reveal this option for all 2018 C7's? [Five patent pictures.]

We’re still unsure as to what the hardcore, track-ready Corvette prototype will be called when it decides to show face, but the media at large has dubbed it the next ZR1. While the jury is out on the name, a new GM patent has spoiled a surprise for the upcoming car.

Patents, first discovered by AutoGuide, detail an active aerodynamic system for the C7 Corvette. Specifically, the patents show a basic layout of what look like the C7 Corvette ZR1 prototype we’ve spied on numerous occasions. The patent was filed on March 23, 2017, and is for “vehicle ride-height determination for control of vehicle aerodynamics.”

The patent spoils various elements involved with the Corvette’s active aero system, which includes an adjustable spoiler, an air dam, a splitter, a diffuser and shutter. These components would all adjust per data fed into the system.

Additionally, the patent goes on to state the system features “a mechanism configured to vary a position of the adjustable aerodynamic-aid element relative to the vehicle body to thereby control a movement of the ambient airflow relative to the vehicle body.” Images also detail a sensor used to detect the ride height of the vehicle and cross check it against a reference frame. A controller can then tell the system to regulate aero based on the sensor’s readings.

Listen to the New Corvette ZR1 Make Excellent Sounds at Laguna Seca

The who’s who of <span class="vglnk">Chevrolet</span> Performance were not-so-quietly out for a track day at the classic California circuit.

According to Corvette Blogger, Chevrolet had four different ZR1s lapping at different times during the day; two with full fledged aero packages and two with smaller wing packages. The quartet was also joined by a C7 Z06 and the recently released <span class="vglnk">Camaro </span><span class="vglnk">ZL1 </span><span class="vglnk">1LE</span>.

2018 Color & Timing Considerations

Introduction: Body Panel Shape & Paint Quality

As announced last year by BGA Plant Manager Kai Spande, not all of the '18's will be painted in the new paint shop. This was confirmed this past weekend by Harlan Charles when he mentioned slow-cooking the 2018 for those painted in the new building. (Harlan also said that we shall see 2018's at next month's BASH.) Thanks also to "jagamajajaran" for his earlier sharing of a fair amount of this info -- though shared by him as "speculation" at that time.

Why is slow-cooking the paint important?

The painted body panels are now going to be baked in the new paint shop at around 175 degrees instead of approximately 275 degrees as in the current paint shop. This is occurring as the new "cooking booths" are now almost three times longer. Why we really care, is that the panels are primarily made of different plastics and resins (glass fibers are now only 20%), and we all know that high heat is not good for plastics and resins, causing them to potentially "soften and even outgas." In the case of body panels, the higher heat increases the amount of potential in the panels for some waviness -- as we have seen in some C7 panels (not happening often, but most typically being observed in the doors). [What none have ever understood is while most C7's are not showing panel waviness, how come a small number have?] Thankfully that is going to be an issue of the past for Corvettes painted in the new building.

Ergo, not only in the new paint shop will be have state of the art paint equipment, and all panels will be "truer" as a result of the much longer paint booths with much lower paint curing temperatures!

GM has committed to "exotic car" paint quality as a result of these two major changes. That is something we can all celebrate!
