    2019 Corvette ZR1 Runs a 7:12 per Nurburgring Spectators

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 was working out at the Nurburgring earlier today, but according to spectators doing their own lap-timing — the LT5-powered supercar is nowhere near the expected 6-minute range, reports Torque News Corvette.

According to people timing the cars from trackside, the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 was lapping the Nurburgring Nordschleife in the range of 7 minutes and 12 seconds. This information comes from the Nurburgring experts at BridgetoGantry.com, who spoke with “avid carspotters based by (turn 13)”. Those same spotters recorded several laps by the new Porsche 911 GT3RS with the Weissach package in the high 6-minute range, with the quickest being a 6:56.

    Very Unofficial Times
I want to stress that this was no an official time for the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 on the Nurburgring Nordschleife course. The 7:12 lap time was recorded by spectators at the track who were using their own method to measure the lap times for a variety of vehicles running “the Ring” on the morning of April 16th. Granted, these are likely people who spend a great deal of time at the track with their stopwatches, so these are people who have an idea of how to get a relatively accurate time, but nothing is as accurate as a proper on-board timing system.

These numbers most certainly could vary from the official numbers, but with the news of this 7:12 lap time for the new Corvette ZR1 being discussed around the internet — we wanted to address what could prove to be far from the car’s best effort.

Oliver Gavin was not behind the wheel. They are probably just running some testing/tuning setups waiting for his return from Long Beach. A thank you to Torque News, though as they noted, very unofficial.

    A Z06 ran a 7:13 last year, so I am personally expecting a sub 7:05, hoping for a sub-7:00.

    Just a warm-up... ;-)

If a 1LE ZL1 Camaro ran a 7:16, and it was quicker, unofficially w/a hotshoe GM driver (the guy was ON POINT). I'm feeling confident there a low 7, high 6-min time out there. Gavin's fast, but is he a true Ringmeister? Give it to Walter Rohrl, IMO...

I would be pleased if the C7 Masterpiece ZR1 wheeled the Nurburgring at 6:30 or below. We shall see after the test and tune is completed and they wheel that amazing work of art around the challenging ring. Hopefully the C8 Masterpiece ME will wheel a 5:75 or below!

Here is a good article from R&T written by Jack Baruth on Nurburgring times and how the GM team approach them.

None of the above, of course, will comfort the members of the Corvette community who consider Ring times to be the track-rat equivalent of the World Series or the Super Bowl. All I can say to them, and to anybody else who takes these completely ungoverned, utterly unsanctioned, and frequently questionable “record laps” seriously, would be this: Lighten up, Francis. The ZR1 is still going to be one of the fastest production cars in history no matter what happens at the Ring. And if you’re fortunate enough to be an owner of a GT3RS Weissach or AMG GTR, you might want to keep an eye out for the new ZR1 the next time you’re at an American track day. Chances are it will be right there in your mirrors.
