GM Media has been busy as the Consumer Electronics Show, yesterday announcing that the 2015 Corvettes would have Performance Data Recording (PDR) and today announcing that they will have 4G LTE capability, along with user ability to download GM sanctioned aps. According to GM's press release, the new system, specifically mentioned as occurring on the 2015 Corvettes, will introduce:

"4G LTE rollout that will bring a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot to most Chevrolet vehicles, which allows passengers to connect their personal devices, such as tablets, to high-speed wireless internet. With OnStar’s 4G LTE connection, the vehicle acts as a mobile hub, giving customers easier access to apps and services that require a high speed cellular or data connection."

Of course, while in motion, the main dash and "center stack" screen will only be able to be modified using voice-recognition technology, though touchscreen capability will be able to be accessed by from passenger occupants, while the vehicle is not in motion. However, looking at one of the pictures released, back seat passengers will be able to separately control and touchscreen "move/use" their laptops while in motion however, similar to how you can currently use your home or business' wifi system.

Here's the entire GM's Media release:

Chevrolet AppShop Offers Connected Car Personalization :Growing list of in-vehicle apps to include news, music and vehicle data:

LAS VEGAS – Chevrolet is adding a new level of infotainment personalization with Chevrolet AppShop, demonstrated today at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show. AppShop will be available this summer on select 2015 models in the U.S. and Canada with MyLink technology, including the Corvette, Equinox, Impala, Malibu, Volt, Silverado and Silverado HD.

Chevrolet AppShop is accessible through an icon displayed on the available MyLink screen that allows owners to view all available apps and download them directly to the vehicle, then organize, update or delete them. Available apps will connect drivers to music, news, weather, travel information, vehicle data and more.

“We listen to our customers, and they want more choices like they have with their smartphones,” said Alan Batey, senior vice president of Global Chevrolet. “They’re telling us they want more integration, more options, and more control in a safe manner. Chevrolet AppShop is an in-vehicle information resource that allows our drivers to customize and refine their experiences from their Chevrolet.”

A seamless data connection for Chevrolet AppShop will be offered with the brand’s broad deployment of high-speed 4G LTE connectivity through OnStar, General Motors’ telematics service that has provided wireless connections to vehicles for more than 17 years. Every Chevrolet with AppShop will come equipped with OnStar 4G LTE hardware with data plans available at an additional charge.

Chevrolet AppShop should help keep smartphones in pockets. Features that require a large amount of attention – such as those that use a keyboard – are unavailable while the vehicle is in motion. While some apps may be familiar to owners, the functionality of these apps may vary between AppShop and a smartphone. For example, The Weather Channel offers audible five-day forecasts to help keep the driver’s eyes on the road.

“At General Motors, we are trying to minimize driver distractions through the use of technology,” said Phil Abram, chief infotainment officer, GM Global Connected Consumer. “In addition to AppShop, Chevrolet offers features like text-to-voice and smartphone voice pass-through integration to create a safer driving environment.”

Among the apps Chevrolet demonstrated at CES is a Vehicle Health App that’s expected to be available for customers by the end of 2014. This app uses vehicle data to provide on-demand diagnostic reports and maintenance notifications, and also provides contact information, appointment scheduling and, on properly equipped vehicles, navigation routing to the owner’s preferred dealer. The Vehicle Health App builds on the OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics and RemoteLink smartphone app already offered through OnStar.

Here is an initial list of the other planned apps:

iHeartRadio (U.S. Only): Offers instant access to more than 1,500 of the nation’s most popular live radio stations from anywhere in the United States, plus Custom Stations inspired by an artist or song. A Favorites menu allows easy access to stations saved across any iHeartRadio-enabled device.
Priceline.com: Allows search, comparison, and booking of a hotel room. With more than 200,000 hotels from which to choose, this app gives travelers the freedom to experience a little more and go a little farther because a place to stay the night is always just a few touches away.
The Weather Channel: Provides visual and audible weather information needed along a driver’s route, including current conditions, hourly and five-day forecasts.
NPR: News, culture and humor from NPR and 900-plus public radio stations nationwide, including live broadcasts and more than 80 all-music streams. Uses vehicle location to automatically localize listening to the nearest NPR member station.
Slacker Radio: Handcrafted internet radio service with more than 13 million songs, plus news, sports, comedy and weather. Playlists can be synchronized with a smartphone, tablet or web browser.
TuneIn Radio: Expands in-car radio listening to more than 100,000 radio stations and more than 2 million podcasts streaming from every continent, including sports, news, talk and music.
Cityseeker: A car concierge that provides relevant and personalized information about attractions, museums, restaurants, nightlife and shopping based on a vehicle’s location.
Eventseeker: Seek, share and live with personalized information about events, concerts, sporting events, festivals, performing arts, family-friendly activities and more. Never miss an event again.
Glympse: The pioneer of temporary, person-to-person location sharing. Allows a driver to share real-time movement with anyone, including speed and estimated arrival time.
Kaliki: A spoken-word news and entertainment app that delivers up-to-the-minute headlines, traffic, sports, weather and marquee episodic content from North America’s leading publishers, broadcasters and producers.
AppShop will be standard on properly equipped Chevrolets with MyLink technology. The apps above would all be free to download with an active data plan.

Exactly. When GM CEO Akerson announced this program conceptually six months ago, he said that this would be a GM moneymaker.

$30 a month is brutal, might as well use your cell plan data and go over your limit if there is one even. "Current AT&T customers will be able to add their vehicle to a shareable bucket of data through AT&T Mobile Share plans." If this makes it something close to a $10 add on, you might have some luck.

More info from CNN:

General Motors unveiled on Sunday a system that pulls together driving performance data with dashcam video -- giving drivers of its flashy Corvette sports car a way to record and share their experience behind the wheel.

The Performance Data Recorder will be available on the 2015 Corvette Stingray, the automaker said, calling it an "industry first."

"The fully integrated system enables users to record high-definition video, with telemetry overlays, of their driving experiences on and off the track," GM said.

After parking, drivers can relive their route -- whether it was around a racing speedway or downtown for groceries.

The video can be queued up on a dashboard-mounted monitor or downloaded to a driver's computer. The display shows the video plus a speedometer, throttle display and gear indicator. Drivers who use it when racing on an established race course can also see a map of the track and their lap time.

GM said it envisioned racers using the footage to "analyze their laps in incredible detail." The average driver could share the footage on social media.

The system pulls together a video camera mounted on the dashboard, a GPS receiver and the car's computer. A 32 gigabyte card inserted near the glove box can hold about 13 hours of driving data, GM said. It was designed by the company that works with the Corvette Racing team.

GM has not said how much the system will cost.

Chevrolet said the 2015 Corvette Stingray would be available in the third quarter of 2014.

Pretty cool, haven't tried it on my onstar vehicles.
Note that only with the 2014 vehicles like our Stingrays is the app free for 5 years. On my 2013 Cadillac XTS it was only free for the first year. On 2013 and earlier OnStar vehicles you must have an active OnStar subscription for the RemoteLink app to work- IMHO a real chincy decision by OnStar.

I wonder if this system would come in handy (dash Cam) if another vehicle runs into you. Could you be ordered by the court to turn over your Vette cam footage while riding behind a drunk driver on the highway who caused a accident?

I think it could come on handy as a dash cam showing how an accident happened. A court can never order you to turn something over that they don't know you have. Also, for all they know, you were not recording at the time.

Perhaps I'm a little old fashioned, but, I don't want any techno-gobble-de-**** in my car, no cell phone, GPS, or any of that stuff. When I get into my car, I want it to be me, my car, my road, and my stereo. (oh, and my wife) If I want any of that techno crap, I'd buy a Radio Shack or something.

Not me! As a systems engineer I love to have the latest and greatest technology!

Have you guys downloaded any apps to your cars? I've seen photos where you can see icons such as weather and Pandora for example. Can you guys let me know what you downloaded that works for the C7 or is made for it even. Just plug your phone to upload it? What is the specific app called for Pandora I get hundreds when I search it.

Nothing needs to be downloaded for the 'weather' icon. As long as you have an active Sirius account you can use the weather icon on your screen. For Pandora you need to open a Pandora account on your iPhone or Android phone and then when you are in your Stingray, turn on the blue tooth on your phone, let it connect with your Stingray, then hit the Pandora icon on your screen and you will receive Pandora via your phone. Note: when you do that you are using your data package on your phone for however long you use the Pandora icon on your Stingray.
