Anyone else experience a rattle in the gear shift (z51, 7 sp.)? If I hold onto the gearshift, it doesn't make the noise, but when I let go, it sounds like something is loose inside, like a screw or something rattling around.

Thoughts?

Thanks guys.

Jason; At what speeds are we talking about? If you drive at the same speed in 6th do you hear it? Regardless, if you have a sense that something is loose in the gear box you better get it in to be checked. Better safe than sorry!

Hi Chip,

Thanks for the reply. I actually haven't even gotten into 6th yet! But it happens at low speeds too, I'd say maybe around 10 MPH as high as 60 (and probably more). It happens in 1st through 4th, probably 5th too. I just noticed it on Saturday. As long as I hold on to the gear shift, she's silent. If not, it sounds like something rattling in the handle of the gear shift knob.

I wish I knew the difference. As I stated earlier, when I hold the gear shift knob, it stops. When I don't hold the knob, you can hear a slight rattling. The best way to explain it is it sounds like something came loose in the gear shift handle and is just rattling back and forth. I don't think it's anything major, it's just annoying. Regardless, it will go to the shop and I'll post the results here.

Problem fixed!

Here's what it says on my service ticket:

Customer states gear shift is rattling.
Road tested with customer and verified shifter rattle.
Shifter mechanism loose at floor mounting.
Resecured transmission shifter control to floor.

Easy fix! She's purring like a kitten again! Ermmm... an angry kitten that is....

Knocking on wood, hopefully no more issues! Just under a 1000 miles! Love this car!!!!!

I know this is an old thread, but I have been experiencing the same shifter rattle in my '14 1LT 7M Stingray. I did a search for "shifter rattle" and this was the first thread that came up. Post #8 in this thread is very helpful, I'm sure this is what I'm experiencing. I'll report back once I am able to address my issue, hopefully this will help someone else.

I had a rattle and found the screw that secures the knob to the shaft had come loose. I just dropped the boot down, tightened the screw, pulled the boot back up and DONE!
