I have tested this air conditioner filter in an oven to make sure it can withstand the heat. The heat in this application is not a problem.

Let me not mislead you, installing required creativity. I ended up using adhesive velcro strips.along the perimeter of the grill opening and filter.

The good news (besides being cheap) is that you do not have to remove the bumper of anything. Just stuff it in.

It has been installed and in place since Feb 2021. Early attempts had to be redone becasue they did not stay in place. I think I know what to do now. Put the adhesive velcro all around the bumper near the edge of the grill. Staple the other half of the velcro strips to the foam filter along the edge.

I have used this concept before on a motorcycle. I wish I found the black filter back then!

Is it really stiff enough to protect the fins from a strike by a small rock or other hard item?

Yes, it will protect the grill from typical road stones
