Yep, I usually set mine to 90 on cars that have the feature but the message stays up so long on the C7 I bumped it up to 100. I thought about turning it off but 100+ really gets the cops attention and will get you a special trip to the station in many counties down here so I need the reminder.

Are you in Valet Mode? I don't know if Valet Mode will limit your speed but I can't think of anything else that would......

 

Yeah the warning is driver set. As for governing the vehicle at set speeds in valet mode I'm going to have to play with that. I would govern mine to 25 in valet mode if this is possible.

Nothing limits the speed of a c7 except the built in limiter at a rediculous speed like 185 or whatever. Valet mode just locks stuff, does not affecting anything else. I wish it did.

It was a 20 min test drive so I don't know if it was valet mode or not. But I love the idea that you could limit some kid from taking it out for a joy ride! I was in 3rd or 4th gear and tried Touring and Sport modes. I could swear I saw something in the owners manual but can't find it now.

 

Nope, Valet mode does not limit speed, neither does this warning, it's just informational and set buy the owner/driver.

Valet mode locks the Infotainment system, glovebox and top (on a convertible), that's all it does.

What exactly are you trying to figure out? If the message popped up but you were able to go faster than 85 then it's the speed warning.

However, there is an error mode that will limit speed. See attached.

Is it possible for the dealer to set limits? Sounds like a good idea even if they can't.

I was told at NCM that Valet mode also keeps the car in V4 configuration. I can't find it in the manual though.

After further investigation, I don't think the V4 thing is true in valet mode.

The valet mode has spurned a lot pf myths. When I picked my car, the sales person told me that valet mode restricts the speed of the vehicle to 25 mph. Pretty ridiculous how uninformed sales people actually are.

Yes, it has. I read this article: 2014 Corvette Stingray and even they suggest the car is limited when in valet mode.

 

Read the spring mountain sales guide and the NPP had 5 modes that it does not have !

Thanks, I think you got it. There must have been a malfunction of the mag ride control and it selected 85mph as the limit.

 

All MINI Coopers also have a speed warning that you can set to warn you if you exceed a certain speed. It is set by the factory at 160 mph. -Bob

 

as mentioned by others, there is a feature on the DIC, which allows the driver to set a max speed for him/herself, which when exceeded, sets off a bell. this does not limit the speed, it only notifies you that you have exceeded your chosen speed. i forget if this is set in the "information" or "performance" screen, but if you did not set it, maybe someone else did, and you should go into the screen and see what is there. if your local speed laws permit, you could try taking your car to that speed, and see if you are able to exceed it. if you are not, then i have no idea what it could be. as mentioned by others, there is a 185 mph "governor" on the vehicle, which is set by manufacturer, as a function of tire limitations and attendant risks. this actually limits the attainable speed of your vehicle.

Note: it sounds as if you were driving a dealers vehicle for a test drive. given this, they may, for liability/insurance purposes have actually set the max speed to 85 mph, so you can ignore the above, and ask them what they did. my comments and those of all others are based on the typical vehicle, as you would take delivery, in the USA.

 

Neither the dealer or anyone else can set or change the max speed. I seriously doubt there was any speed limiter on the car and if the dealer let a car out with a mag ride error they need to get their act together.. OP has never responded to whether the car would actually go any faster than 80.

Thanks for all your thoughts. Just to be clear the car would not go faster no matter what mode. Also the dealer had to jump start the car to get it started using one of those large floor chargers on start (250 amp) for maybe 5 min. The battery was very low. So low the dash was not completely lit. I urged them not to keep it on start charge so long. So maybe it was the mag ride control error, some sort of damage due to charging, or some other malfunction? Also this car had been sold and returned!

Bottom line? I ain't buying that one!

 

Wow, lots of issues. I would run, not walk away from both this dealer and car.

I was told when you select valet mode, an inflatable valet inflates on the driver's side and drives your car for you. But I may be wrong.

 

No, that's the undocumented HOV lane mode.
