This Saturday I will be going for my 1st oil change with about 1300 miles on my baby, already spoke with my local dealer that I want mobil 1 instead of the dexos that came with mine and he is fine with it. To help out the grease monkey that does the oil changes I modified my oil cap that probably cost me 5 cents in the labeling tape. I say Mobil 1 and 9.8 QT this way he will not overfill my tank and make me burp it all over my air intake system ;) Automotive wheel system Car Auto part Vehicle Wheel

I'd change it to 9.5 qt.....running a bit low won't hurt a thing and insure no burp. It's a reservoir, the engine gets all the lubrication via injection, it needs for far less than 9.8qts.

I was going according to my revised manual? If 9.5 is the norm I will redo it? chime in friends who have done oil changes already. What is the sweet spot?

Just my opinion, I've run every car and boat I've ever owned in the bottom of the hash marks to keep oil from anywhere near an overfill.

Mine took 9.3 qt to reach 3/4 on the hash marks. It was covering the upper hole on the dipstick from the factory. I used an immeasurable amount of oil in the first 1000 miles.

Like I said in a previous post, if I do have the dealer do the changes I will ask them to fill it with 9 qts and give me the unopened 10th. I'll top it off when I get home.

Is switching from dexos to Mobil 1 what most people are doing?

I prefer a full synthetic (Penzoil Platinum in my case), but I've also used Mobil 1 as well for many years, and it's a good oil.

The Dexos 1 specification covers conventional, blended and full synthetic oils for gasoline engines (Dexos 2 is for diesels), but I feel the LT1 deserves a full synthetic!

Great idea and mod. I just had my oil changed yesterday and they put 9.8. Should I drain some out? All this oil stuff is confusing me a bit.

Just check your level using the procedure in the manual and as long as it's not over the top hole in the dipstick you're good to go.

Some of use run a little less than topped out full, it's a personal preference, nothing more.

Is this new requirement only on the Z51 if so what's the non Z51 requirement?

CPL Mo USMC Vet
Only Z51, the manual is accurate for wet sump motors.

Steve,
I think 9.5 might be best. .3 qt. is not going to cause any problem, but might prevent one.

That might be difficult if they fill from a drum.
