Broken valve spring, really?

So, I limped home last weekend with a horrible misfire that suddenly appeared along with the Check Engine, Check StabiliTrak, and Check Rear Axle warning all in at the same time. The following day I had it towed in to my local dealer and it barely made it on to the back of that truck, nearly coughing itself to death in the process. When they got around to diagnosing the issue they started with electronics and even waited a day for the more experienced technician to get back from school. Today the most recent update went as follows:

One cylinder was low on compression and then it was discovered it had a broken valve spring. I'm still not quite sure why that would manifest itself with the particular error messages that it did given that it wasn't electrical. The service adviser had no answer either. I babied this thing during the break in period and had the first oil change at 500 miles and have never really put my foot to the floor just yet in 1300 miles. I only hope this isn't a trend I'm going to experience again down the road, maybe on the side of said road even. I love this car and think it looks incredible but my tolerance level has it's limits, mind you I'm not saying I'm at the end yet don't get me wrong.

AFM: Active Fuel Management, another name for Variable displacement engine which is an automobile engine technology that allows the engine displacement to change, usually by deactivating cylinders, for improved fuel economy. The technology is primarily used in large, multi-cylinder engines. It started with infamous Caddy’s 4. 6. 8 V8 of the 80s.

The reason its mentioned here is simple it has a bad reputation and service people sometimes will blame the system for engine ills as describe here. But it should be noted the Variable Displacement is a strategy employed by almost all manufacturers. even Porsche is considering for some of its upcoming cars.

Being around when Cadillac came out with 4-6-8 engine the big issue was faux failures. The transition between modes was so clunky Caddy owners thought their engines were failing.

I advised a friend who just bought and A8 C7 to use manual mode during the break in period (AFM is all ways active in all but manual mode in an A8 and only active in ECO for the M7). That should tell you about my confidence in AFM.

It would be interesting to see the engine failures by transmission type. Since most of us M7 owners do not use AFM other than winning bets on HW MPG!

just an update broken valve spring, bent valve damaged piston and cracked valve guide, and all this at 25 mph. Dealer says they can only put 1 unbalanced piston and rod in and send the head out for repair.I have worked at a FORD dealership for 37 years and have never seen a single piston replaced on a modern engine, it is always a short or long block. After the the bad luck with my 15 a feel like GM is giving me the shaft.2 corvettes in 2 years with major problems I'm not real happy with general motors

As you, i've owned multiple new Vettes over the years. If this happened to me.... twice..... "not being happy with GM" would be an understatement.

Hope GM jumps on this and make things whole!

Welcome to our forum raym74. So sorry to read about your broken valve spring. I know some members have gone the route of replacing all springs with upgraded ones. Keep us in the loop on your decision. Is yours non-Z?

I also had a broken valve spring on my 2016 Z06 at about 20k miles. Same thing--slow driving just happened. Only the spring was damaged, no damage to engine. Covered under an extended Chevy Protection Plan. No problems since, four years later and now at 30k miles. There is a farily detailed discussion of it with pictures at https://www.stingrayforums.com/threads/dead-z06.85858/?post_id=981599#post-981599. --Bob
