Before I get into this discussion, I would like to clarify that I live in Texas which is a constitutional carry state but regardless I am a licensed concealed carry holder and have been for several years. Three things I never leave my home with are my identification, cellphone, and my Glock 43. I also served in the US Army from 1990 until I retired in 2013 with the majority of my career as a member of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd AD.

So now that I got my credentials out of the way I'd like to discuss practical placement for my pistol. Practical means quick access without having to open the compartment behind the infotainment or the center consol. I am a right-handed shooter who conceal carries my holster right appendix. That works best for me outside of my car but not when seated. I'm not a huge person at 5'10" and 190 but given the limited cockpit space for the C7 I'm open to suggestions.

A couple admin points about Texas state law. It is legal to have a rifle in a gun rack but illegal to have a weapon which can be seen while looking into the vehicle. When I exit my vehicle, my pistol comes with but if I happened to be pulled over and a cop sees a pistol in a location other than a gun rack then it's illegal. And most importantly it would have to be hidden yet able to be obtained with maximum subtlety in the event that someone manages to point a weapon at me before I have time to react.

All Suggestions welcome and thank you.

You think? I'm a white male who drives an $80,000 car in a city that is 75% Hispanic. Do you think that is worrying too much? Twice in 7 years I have had to point my weapon while in my car at someone who approached in an aggressive manner. Keep in mind that I fought 3 tours in Iraq so I know what hostile intent looks like. In both situations as soon as they saw my pistol, they did a 180 in the opposite direction.

I also carry concealed, which is legal where I live in KY. My suggestion would be to keep carrying like you have been, but leave your shirt untucked so as to cover your Glock.
Thank you for your service and stay safe out there. I did not realize that it was illegal for a firearm to be viewed from the outside of a car, but I admit that I do know know anything about Texas laws. By the way, excellent choice of firearm. I am a retired law enforcement officer and carried a .40 Glock. See there, I learned something else from this forum. Thanks for the info.

Thank you. As a retired Iraq war Vet, I know a couple things about firearms. My favorite pistol was my Glock 30. LOVED that pistol. Accurate as hell, reliable, and very little recoil. But during my divorce had to sell it for attorney fees.

Johnsutter, I’m not an attorney nor do I play one on tv but to the best of my knowledge in Texas a holstered handgun in plain view inside a vehicle is not an offense. Key is having it in a holster, even if on a seat or console. Have some LEO swat and patrol guys that I talked to about this too.

This is cool, I assume the magnet plate is held in place with some kind of adhesive? I'd hate to mess up kick panel. And is there any scractches/marring to the slide? I can imagine hitting bumps it could shift a little each time and possibly make marks on slide.

I use a web holster called an acorn it is used for pistol storage in gun safes. the left side has Velcro so it attaches really well to the carpet on the transmission tunnel . It will hold any size gun really well.

Interesting. I could use something similar with magnets. I use magnets with felt to secure my pistol in my gun safe so when I open the door the pistol doesn’t fall out. I have a lot of double sided 3M tape which I use to secure magnets and I also have industrial strength velcro so that could definitely work. I’m sold. That tac magnet is perfect. I could attach one to the door and a second under the steering column.

I use a backpack on the passenger seat. In my home state the law reads it must be inside of a container. The law is very vague on the term container but even a paper bag would qualify. I would suspect in Texas a purpose built off body carry system would qualify as proper storage.

My two cents which is probably worth nothing. All these suggestions are great, but the issue is the interior of the car is cramped so obviously you have to find the right solution for you for easy access. I am a woman and couldn't imagine myself wearing a holster at my waist while driving.

With that said, per the link below "Yes, license holders are authorized to carry in their vehicles but the handgun must be either concealed or in a holster."

The keyword here is OR. Thus your firearm can be secured in your holster and visible and be within the bounds of TX law.

More nerdy info:

Best of luck in your decision making.

According to this article from texas.gov

it's still required to keep a handgun in a holster if it is in plain view in your car in Texas.

I either wear mine, which is not only uncomfortable, but probably dangerous in an accident simply due to the gun being between me and the lap belt, or in the center console.

I have an M&P Shield .40 and it fits in there easily, while holstered, along with my large Note 9 phone.

However, the issue here is that neither of these are great places for getting to your gun quickly and surreptitiously in an emergency.

I live in nearby Louisiana and the best ive found is the molle back cover but it requires you to reach behind the passenger seat. In Louisiana law the vehicle is an extension of your property so whether its open or 'concealed' though i imagine texas has something similar. If you had a handgun or a rifle with a folding stock or collapsible it should be easy to move around in. If you have a gun bag you could store a rifle behind the passenger seat to comply with the "no visible firearms" .

I keep my Beretta 92fs which is a full size 9mm in the console. It's right there if needed. When I exit the car I slide it in back of pants. I also had to use my weapon to scare away a crazy person last year.

I’ve tried a few options for keeping a firearm secure yet accessible in my C7, and a simple holster setup under the steering column worked best for me. I picked one up at a **** Rapids MN gun store, and it fits perfectly without getting in the way. Center console is another good spot, but it depends on what you’re comfortable with and how quickly you want to access it.
