C8 Corvette Stingray Fuel Economy Numbers Revealed
BY JONATHAN LOPEZ— JAN 28, 2020 From GMAuthority

Every successive generation of vehicles brings with it certain expectations – more features, newer technology, and greater speed. We already knew the latest C8 Corvette ticks every one of those boxes, but now we can add yet another accomplishment to the list, as it was recently revealed that the latest mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette also offers greater fuel efficiency.

The new C8 Corvette fuel economy figures were announced ahead of the competition debut of the C8.R race car at the Rolex 24 at Daytona this weekend, where the Corvette Racing No. 3 Corvette C8.R of Jordan Taylor, Antonio Garcia, and Nicky Catsburg finished fourth in the GTLM class.

According to Chevrolet, the street-spec C8 Corvette will yield 15 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, besting the outgoing C7 generation. [bold added by jsvette]

While the C7 is equipped with the naturally aspirated 6.2L LT1 V8, which is tuned to produce 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque, the C8 Corvette mounts the naturally aspirated 6.2L LT2 V8, which makes 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

Chevy says the C8 Corvette will go roughly 490 miles on a tank of gas while driving on the highway. That, in addition to its dual storage compartments, should make the new Vette a decent long-range cruiser, at least as far as mid-engine sports cars are concerned.

The C8 Corvette sends output to the rear wheels through the new M1L dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission, while the C7 Corvette is offered with either the eight-speed M5U automatic transmission, or the seven-speed MEP manual transmission.

Fuel returns for the C7 depend on the transmission in play, with 15 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway achieved with the eight-speed M5U auto box, and 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway when equipped with the seven-speed MEP manual.

Notably, the C8 Corvette weighs more than the C7, with roughly an extra 200 pounds of heft compared to a similarly equipped C7 Corvette.
While mpg is influenced by a huge number of factors, the C8 Corvette’s cylinder deactivation technology undoubtedly plays a significant role in the relatively frugal fuel consumption.

Granted, fuel economy probably isn’t the most impactful feature for C8 Corvette buyers, but considering the new mid-engine Vette is billed as an everyday supercar, it’s still something some drivers will want to know.

Umm how many MPG is it? How big is the gas tank?
Good point Ben. My guess is that statement of 490 miles to the tank by GM is based on highway cruising without city driving from start-up to fill time.
