Before I head to the dealer to talk to their body shop guy, I wanted to canvass the group to see if anyone has a good idea for what it will/should cost to replace the rear section of my C7? It got dinged in the parking lot by an unknown assailant and while it's not fatal, it does bug me. Along with the body color, the lower black section on the left side needs replacing.

Do you know if the sections are sent from Bowling Green pre-painted -- I'm concerned the local folks won't be able to match the Lime Rock Green properly. I certainly don't want to compound my dilemma with mis-matched paint sections. (NOT that a Chevy dealer would ever do that…)

Any knowledgeable help is greatly appreciated.

Very subjective relative to pricing, all depends on location, quality of the dealer's shop, just a lot of parameters here. A dealer with a good body shop will have no problem matching colors, they have a variety of technical information for matching.

I may suggest you locate a local Corvette club and inquire as to what shops are good and who to stay away from. A non associated dealer body shop can put out excellent results, have to do some research and ask around.

If you are going to a dealership for the parts and repair, If Chevy is like Acura, the replacement parts will come pre-painted. I have a front spoiler on my TL that my wife dinged up enough it needed to be replaced, so the local dealer ordered new in my moon silver that matched perfectly.

Our friends did Museum Delivery on their 2014 LMG, and on their way home, having covered 2,400 miles safely, just 100 miles from their house, a deer ran out and smashed into the front fascia, fender and hood. Luckily they were just fine. They had it repaired and even though we knew/know it was repainted, at a Corvette club meeting with about eight to ten of its staring at it, we could not fine a single edge that showed where they had re-painted, stopped blending it, etc. The color matching and paint color were/are flawless.

My grille was damaged by some retread on the interstate. I paid $1300, at a dealer in the FL panhandle, for the repair.

You asked about replacing the rear. Do you mean replace the body panel, or just repaint the one you already have? New upper and lower rear fascias would have to be quite expensive, plus removal and replacement labor, plus painting each of them...

As far as I know, replacement rear panels from Chevrolet would arrive at your local body shop unpainted. There are several reasons for this. I will mention only one. There is no way that the color on the replacement panels would match the colors on the cars if the panels came pre-painted. A Lime Rock Green which has lived in Florida for a few years will not be exactly the same color as a Lime Rock Green car which has lived in Minnesota for a few years.

Let us know what price you are quoted. I will not be at all surprised if it is at least a few thousand.

My only experience with factory body panels is with Ford. They all came painted black, and it was up to the body shop to color match the paint to the car. Even if GM shipped the part pre-painted, odds are it wouldn't match perfectly. The paint on your car fades over time, so a brand new part won't match. And paint varies from lot to lot, too. Another member of our local club has a DSOM coupe, and his car is noticeably darker than mine, even though they're both the "same" color.

Good points all thank you -- as for the cost, I'm guestimating that it will probably run $3,000 including parts and labor. Honestly, the damage is barely noticeable, but it drives me crazy each time I was and mess with the area of the car. I need to take her in for an oil change and to have the recall taken care of. I'll get a quote then.

I have the exact same problem you do. While backing into my garage, I accidentally hit my garbage can, spinning it around and causing extremely slight damage to the rear and left rear side piece, and to the black rear panel. The damage is really minimal, not noticed by anyone unless I show them, but I know it's there and it bugs me to no end.

I'm curious to hear what you find out from your dealer about the cost of the repair. Unfortunately, I think you are close in your estimate, which will probably preclude me from having it fixed right now. I hace other priorities which take priority at the moment.

Hi Alaskapaul,
I just got the quote from the dealer's body shop: If they can repair the damage to the upper and lower panels - Bondo/repaint and the like it's about $1,500. But if they have to replace the two panels the price goes up to $2,900. They won't know until they have it disassembled, which by then I'm committed either way. My insurance deductible is pretty high so either way I'll end up paying for it myself. Still not sure what I'm going to do. I'll keep you all posted once I decide.

Last summer I had a PU with a cow catcher on the front poke the rear at a stop light. I had my local dealer do the work (DFW area), replaced the rear fascia to make it look new again.....the bill was;

Can't expect the painting robots at Bowling Green to paint one part! They are programmed to paint a car in parts on a special carrier! In fact, a good painter can match even a sun faded color! Just be sure you find a shop that is confident they can provide a match! They do that all the time, that is there job.

Hello all...I am new here, been reading a ton in this awesome site. This is my first post....After shopping for a few months, and walking away from one deal (black 2016 stingray 2LT). We have just bought our first corvette... (we are the second owner of a) 2015 stingray LT3 shark gray...before purchasing, I did a total walkaround the car with my fingers feeling every seam looking for imperfections...only noticed one seam where the wheel well and fender met on the rear drivers side. Nothing major. This was our wedding anniversary to each other. We took delivery of the car a couple weeks later. After having it home for a about a week I happened to noticed a small “rash” on the passenger side mirror (about the size of your fingertip). Seeing that I was concerned and after walking around the car to my horror I noticed a couple of scratches on the rear passenger side bumper. Kind of made me think that it was rubbed/bumped into at the dealership? By maybe a porter? Maybe the dealership new about it? Maybe they didn’t? In any case I took delivery of it, so it was my baby now...I had to get it fixed. I guess shame on me for not doing another “total” walk around before taking it home. Lesson learned for sure! Well I went to my local dealer (who does have a vette specialist working there), they told me they do not do any body work there and recommmended a shop that they send all their muscle cars to. Went and got a quote...wow...to fix the mirror “rash” and the bumper scratches would cost me a total of 1500.00. Much of that cost (about 700.00 worth) involved removing/reinstalling the rear bumper/spoiler. This shop insisted that the correct way to do the repair was to totally remove the bumper, not try and fix it while it was on the car. I will have it in a couple days now...so I will try and post some before and after pictures in the next couple of days. If I can figure out how to do that on this site. My/our fingers are crossed...that everything will turn out good. I figure (and am hopeful) the dealership would not risk it’s reputation sending us to a bad shop.

JDUB, welcome aboard glad you posted. Keep us updated. I had some issues and the local DFW dealer in grapevine did an awesome job matching paint.

Hey everyone,
Sorry I've been tardy, but I just recently had the damage repaired. The best quote I got from a body shop was $3,200 -- but low and behold, my new neighbor is a paint & body guy for a high-end dealership. He took it in and did the work on his time. Bottom line is my out of pocket was under $1,000. He was able to remove the rear and fix the damage to the foam (whatever it is) supports and brackets. The big cost was the hand finishing of the dents and painting. I have to say it looks fantastic. I know this isn't much help to you all, but proves it does pay to know the right people.
