So when I closed the trunk this afternoon, I pushed down on top of the trunk above the latch to close it all the way. When I did, I heard a loud crack and lo and behold there is about a 5 inch crack underneath the paint above the latch point ...

Now my first thought was did I put too much pressure, but I baby my car to the point where I used a microfiber towel between the car and my hand before closing to avoid fingerprints. Do you guys think this a manufacturing defect or have you come across something like this before? I would understand it I hit it with something or put something heavy on it, but should a $70k car crack like this when just closing the trunk?!!

Lastly, do you think this is something the warranty will cover? I am so sad right now... I had this car for less than 2 weeks... I will try to get a picture up, but its hard to take the picture as all you see is the reflection from the paint.

I'm missing something? "Above the hinge"? Wouldn't you press above the "latch" at the bottom of the lid? The crack is in the top of the car?

Andy; I have read of others that have had cracking on the trunk area. I fully expect that it will be covered by warranty. Run it by your dealer for a look - see and keep us posted after their review. By the way, welcome, and tell us a little about your car.

Welcome to our forum Andy. Sorry to hear about your trunk lid. I presume you have a 2015, is it a convertible or a coupe? This is the first time I have heard of anyone's trunk getting a 5 inch crack at the hinge point. Most of us close our trunks at the back edge either using the built in hand grip/hole or with two hands at the rear edge of the lid. I am not sure I understand how you close yours from the hinge side. Was there anything including possibly part of your microfiber towel that could have gotten caught between the trunk body and trunk lid as you closed it?

The only cracking that I have seen reported on our forum is in the form of a hairline crack in the paint by the wing where it meets the lid, not a 5 inch crack up by the area where the lid is hinged.

Don't they tell you not to push down on the trunk?

I'd be sad to! Sorry this happened to your new car. I'm confused as well by your description. This forum has been invaluable to me so maybe a little more info would help us help you. Try to provide details like Jeff mentioned, i.e vert or coupe, as this will give us a better idea. To that end, I watched the final assembly folks in Bowling Green last week at the Bash during a plant tour going over cars and let me tell you, they weren't exactly gentle while closing doors, checking hatches, etc! Closing my hood and hatch (coupe) can be an exercise in "how much force am I going to use this time" to get either to close completely. I usually open a door to close the hatch and the hood requires a little finesse but firmness to get it to latch on both sides. Good luck on the fix and welcome to the forum.

Whoa, guess I'll stop closing the trunk like that. Generally it wont close all the way due to air pressure in the cabin so you give it a push to latch. Other way I've heard to do it is to crack a window / open a door

If warranty won't cover it, insurance will under your comp coverage.

When I had the museum delivery they said just slam it and if that didn't do it-put it down-NO Thanks! I always open a door then close the lid-so much safer. My C5 was that way too, but my C6 had the automatic pull down thing. That sucks Andycho409-I bet it's a flaw in the trunk that gave way. Good luck!

I have a vert and et stuff in and out of the hatch/trunk without opening a door.
I press down firmly but slowly to close the hatch in the center. So far ok

The recommended way to close the cargo hatch on a 2014 and 2015 coupe remains to open a door, or lower a window about 1 1/2".

Neverthelss, this will be covered by warranty, IMO, on a two week old car. Sorry Andy!!! Wishing for a very quick total resolution.

Something fishy here. Why hasn't Andy chimed in? Coupe or vert? Wassup?

I think he mint to say latch, I don't think you could overcome the force of the gas cylinders to close at or about hinge area. If so as andycho409 says I could see a cracked deck lid.

Thank you everyone for your response. And yes, I meant to say latch not hinge! The crack is above the latch where you would normally press down if the trunk didn't close all the way.

As for my Stingray, it is a 2014 Z51 3LT coupe. I brought the car to the dealership this weekend and the service manager said he will contact GM to see if this will be covered by the warranty. I was told to follow up in a week for answers... You've mentioned there were few others that had this issue, could you point to to their post so I can see what their resolutions were?

Thanks again for the replies!!
