Have you ever tried to push that string up a hill?

If GM did not determine they got a better EPA MPG rating, we would not have an ECO mode. But having said that, we all know that the EPA, MPG test is a set of specficially defined parameters, and who is to say that any car manufacturer, maybe most car manufacturers, do not create a system that performs well under the MPG test? As whether that EPA standard test is real world indicative, learned the following today:

AARP said:
Drivers of vehicle model years 1996 to 2014 achieved an average of 12% better fuel economy then EPA estimates, while drivers of diesel engines averaged 20% better then EPA ratings. Motorist driving vehicles with small displacement engines (2 L or less) and drivers of manual transmissions reported their mileage is 17% better than the EPA ratings.
However, even that good news begs the question of whether the 2014–15 Corvette gets better mileage ECO versus Sport. Believe that on average the 2014/15 Corvette StingRay does get better fuel mileage in ECO, though perhaps for your typical driving routes, it may not.

Fully anticipate fuel mileage in stop and go city driving in ECO mode will show very little if any advantage over touring or sport. However, at long sustained highway speeds, maintaining the same speed on flat roadways for many miles should bring the best results. Just my opinion on the matter.

Don't you have to be going above a certain speed for the V4 mode to work anways? Below 60kph it's always a V8. I read that's how it works on the Silverado.

no...search it out here...it can work at any speed on an automatic, only in eco with a 7 speed...

I don't believe speed but rather required torque and lack of a call for acceleration is the key to V4 vs V8. I have seen RedHot in V4 on level roads slowing to a stop (when it is always in V8) or driving at a constant low speed (25 mph for example).

Yes jsvette, I have same experience with my manual trans. It will switch to V4 in lower gears as you said when torque is not required.

I need to pipe in on my experience here, not sure whether it's peculiar to my driving style or not: I've found that by using Track Mode, basically all the time, I not only can drive my 7spd non-Z51 smoother, but I get better gas mileage than I do in Eco, Touring, or Sport. Again, I know that goes against how the engineers designed those modes, but it's my real-world experience. Now to qualify that a little further I live in south Orange County California, traffic is heavy on both surface streets and freeways. I'm thinking if I could ever (dreaming here) get a long stretch of freeway with no traffic in Eco mode I would get better mileage. Right now the heavy traffic on my daily commute nets me about 17 mpg. If I put my foot in it (hard not to, but I work hard to be an adult!) it drops to 12 mpg. Ok, say what you will, but that's my honest experience over the last 2,000 miles (currently just over 4,000 on the car).

I'm going to have to keep an eye on that next spring. I've never seen it work on my M7 at low speeds and low torque requirements.
