I know there's another thread on CG availability but since this is a thread about my experiences navigating this I figured it was the best place to post it.
After having a long conversation with my salesman as well as some email conversations with other dealers I believe I know what the process is for those who have ordered Cyber Gray. I also have a bit more insight into the ordering and allocation system which helps understand how your car may, or may not get built in Cyber Gray.
Whether your order needs to be in Status 1100 or Status 2000 actually depends on which dealer you are placing your order with. Actually, what really matters is what the dealer's order bank looks like. Let me explain.
In this example let's look at 2 high volume dealers, one with more Retail Sold orders in their order bank than can be filled with this week's allocation and one without. Forgetting about the Cyber Gray issue lets just consider how the system pulls orders for production.
The dealer with more allocation than sold orders will add Retail Stock orders to their order bank to get full use of their allocation, if they choose to do that and most do. The dealer with more retail sold orders won't necessarily add Retail Stock orders unless constraints mean they would have allocation left over after all Sold orders that aren't constrained are assigned.
The GM system automatically matches orders in their order bank with their weekly allocation based on priority, Sold orders take priority over Stock orders at the dealer level. When that happens is unclear, my dealer's salesmen see that report on Friday, other people quote Tuesday which I expect is when it becomes final. At that point, the order manager at the dealership can modify their orders up until Saturday afternoon (not entire clear on the deadline) to move orders in or out based on specific needs.
Basically the system matches orders to allocation and if the dealership does nothing, a certain number of status 1100 orders automatically get pulled on Tuesday based on that automation. The dealer doesn't have to match orders to allocation, they only have to manipulate what the system does automatically if they want to re-prioritize certain orders OR if they need to add orders to take advantage of excess allocation. The assignments are done on a priority basis where the type of order and the order entry date carry the most weight. That priority is then beat against constraints and the output is what the dealer sees.
So, back to the issue of Cyber Gray.
For dealers with more allocation than Retail Sold orders in their order bank all Cyber Gray orders would need to be assigned to allocation this week and move to 2000. No other Cyber Gray cars would be moved to production from that dealer.
For dealers with more Retail Sold orders in the system than they have allocation for this week, all Retail Sold orders, whether moving to 2000 this week or staying at 1100 will be moved to production as allocation allows over the next few weeks and retain Cyber Gray.
For all dealers, any Retail Stock orders with Cyber Gray that are not moved to 2000 this week go away.
Literally, as I was typing this, I received an email from my dealer confirming my order has moved to 2000 so I'm in and will get Cyber Gray.
I hope this helps people understand a little. At this point, if you don't have an order in and accepted by a dealer and have an order code then the only way you will get a Cyber Gray is to get an order in with a dealer that has open allocation TODAY or hunt for on in stock now or in the future.
