Hello Everyone.

I have had this intermittent problem since I got my car in April.

It's not possible to reproduce, hence the intermittent label.

When I leave my iPod (and it's up to date), plugged in, when the car is restarted, it "cannot find any devices." This is quickly cured by unplugging and replugging.

I am in the IT business and that's how computers used to be fixed like in the 80's... still happens now, especially to routers, but not as often. Nothing shows on diagnostics and there is no flash update.

But, has anyone had this issue and if so, has anyone found a fix/work around?

I thought I had one by resetting the iPod, but that only worked for so long.

If they'd send me the source code, I'd actually try to find someone who could read it and find the bug (I am an old programmer and cdould not read whatever it's written in).

Or it could be electronic.

Regardless, this is the kind of thing that "fixes itself" on the way to the dealer and then cannot be reproduced. Except after you've left.

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you.

Update your iPod software from iTunes.

Keep a loaded SD card in the slot and you can change to that....I do that when I'm driving and the iPod goes flat...and I don't want to screw with plug/unplug....

You say "When the car is restarted". I don't leave mine plugged in but I find it takes several seconds after starting the car for the device to be recognized. If I get a "cannot find any devices" I just push the C7 media button and it comes up.

Thanks for your answer. sometimes it finds it and it does take a minute to happen. But this is different, it does not find it and pushing the Media button yields "no devices found." It must be "rebooted."

From the other answers it seems like this might happen from time to time in others' cars....

Related ipod issue

Hello everyone:

I have a related issue regarding using my iPod Touch in my C7 Stingray.
The iPod is connected to the USB port behind the infotainment screen.

The songs on the iPod (about 3,000) play fine but with one problem.....

Every song starts twice. The selected song starts, and plays for about 5 seconds then stops. After another few seconds the same song starts again but this time plays through to the end of the song. At this point the next song begins and does the same thing.

I have tried starting songs from a play list, by artist, genre, etc but the same thing happens.
I have a second iPod which also acts the same way when connected to the USB port. I have reset the iPod, deleted all data and songs, installed all iPod and iTunes updates, then reinstalled the songs but still got the same results.

Also, this problem occurs whether I start song play from the iPod itself or from the infotainment center.

Any help or info on this problem is appreciated.

Thanks

Since it does it with multiple devices report the problem to the dealer. It sounds like you can easily recreate the problem so the dealer shouldn't be able to fall back on the "no trouble found" reply.

It will probably be corrected by a clean refresh of the Infotainment system software by your dealer.

What I think you are encountering is an issue with the index function of the media ports and the port not "waking up" to the device installed. The device has a sleep state and the USB bus has a sleep state and the car has a power down state. By keeping the device plugged in, one of the two sleep states isn't being cycled. It seems that if a device is left in after the power down, the RAP (retained accessory power) will keep the device awake until power off and then put the port to sleep to prevent charging while the car is off. By unplugging and re-plugging, you are triggering the USB bus in the car to wake and look at the drive to re-index the media. The easiest fix is to keep the device unplugged until you start the car and then plug it in prior to use. For some this is cumbersome. I use a SD card (kept in the car full time) and on occasion plug my iPhone in to the cable in the USB port. I've never encountered the "media not found" doing it this way but have with a test with an iPod left plugged in full time.

The symptom you are describing is representative of a corrupt index for the media drive. The car will take a snapshot of the song list to make it available to the user on connection while the media index is reviewed. This prevents long delays of audio unavailability during the index process. This way, it can start a song while it confirms it's presence during the index process. It should only misbehave like this when a song is deleted from the media drive and then attempt to be played on initial subsequent insertion of the media source. I.E. - it knew the song was there, starts the song snippet and then realizes it is gone and changes songs. It should play both the index and then start the song a second time. The other issue that can contribute to this is when the media source list exceeds the nested file structure depth of 11 levels (file, in a folder, in a folder, in a folder, in a folder, etc.)

From OP, great tech explanation - thank you. I cannot tell you if this is the case with other cars, but... I believe it's not. Hence it might be a GM exclusive. We call these things "features."

May I ask, what do you do with your SD card? That is how do you just copy some mp3's on there or is there a way to make playlists, etc.

Many thanks!

I use iTunes. As far as copying files, literally just select and drag them over to an open window of the SD Card directory. As far as playlists, yes, you can use playlists but it requires a little intervention. When you create a playlist and export it from iTunes it appends the directory information to the list. You need to go in to the list (in notepad) and remove the pointers to your PC directory structure. For example:

C:\iTunes\myMusic\anysong.mp3 will need to be edited to just anysong.mp3. Any music not in mp3 format will need to have the extension changed to reflect the actual file type, etc.

Thank you!

Just to further illustrate, I just created a playlist in iTunes. Right click on it and export it. It will open a file window and you can name it and save it. It will save to your drive with a m3u extension. Open the list by right clicking and selecting open with, Notepad.

When you view the files in notepad it will look like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:219,Mercy - Duffy
C:\Users\paulp_000\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Duffy\Rockferry\07 Mercy.m4a
#EXTINF:224,Let It Go - Idina Menzel
C:\Users\paulp_000\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Compilations\Frozen (Deluxe Edition) [Original Motion\1-05 Let It Go.m4a
#EXTINF:280,Let It Be Me - Ray LaMontagne
C:\Users\paulp_000\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Ray LaMontagne\Gossip In the Grain\02 Let It Be Me.m4a
#EXTINF:172,Stay With Me - Sam Smith
C:\Users\paulp_000\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Sam Smith\In the Lonely Hour (Deluxe Version)\03 Stay With Me.m4a

You will need to change it to look like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:219,Mercy - Duffy
Duffy\Rockferry\07 Mercy.m4a
#EXTINF:224,Let It Go - Idina Menzel
Frozen (Deluxe Edition) [Original Motion\1-05 Let It Go.m4a
#EXTINF:280,Let It Be Me - Ray LaMontagne
Ray LaMontagne\Gossip In the Grain\02 Let It Be Me.m4a
#EXTINF:172,Stay With Me - Sam Smith
Sam Smith\In the Lonely Hour (Deluxe Version)\03 Stay With Me.m4a

Leave the artist and album information in tact, this will allow you to browse by Album or Artist.
