So when I brought my car in for an oil change at the dealership ( it was still free change at that time), I asked about the new recommended oil by Mobil.
They had absolutely no clue what I was talking about.
Figure I’ll just stick with the 5w-30...

Google it, and you will find several internet vendors, including Amazon, in six packs @ $10 a quart.

 

Interesting... On my last trip to Wally World, I noticed that they did have the Dexos 2 ESP 0W40, but if it doesn't move, will likely disappear... think I'll snag some the next time I'm there...

 

Please school me on why the new oil was recommended by GM .

 

The 0W-40 is track approved and is chemically compatible with the cats, which the 10W-50 is not. Also saves us track guys from changing out the oil after a track day.
Most volume dealers will have the new oil.

I find it frustrating that when you ask my dealer about the 0-40 they say yep that is what we put in the 2019's. I have a 2017. When I ask for it in mine they say no yours is spec'd for the 5-30. It is the same darn engine of the 19's. No different. Why can't I get the 0-40. It would be nice is GM just required that oil for all C7's. I don't track so the 5-30 is probably fine. But I would like the little more robust oil (0-40).

 

I suspect that part of the reason GM has changed to this Dexos2 oil is that it has a very low ash content. Dexos2 is for diesels (though diesel oil is fine for gasoline engines too) and in modern emission controlled diesels, very low ash content oils are specified to extend the life of diesel particulate filters and other emission related hardware.

 

So, I went to my local Chevy dealer in November to get an oil change prior to going for a track weekend. I told them I wanted the 0W40 ESP for the oil fill in my 2017 Grand Sport. They came back with a printout they got using my VIN which showed the proper oil for my car was the 5W30 (or 10W50 for track use). I explained to them that at the 2018 Bash, Mobil1 reps had done a presentation in which they said 0W40 ESP would be appropriate for all C7s for both street and track use. They even provided us with a service bulletin # that we could use as reference. I gave the service bulletin # to the service rep and his manager and after reading it they pointed to the printout with my VIN and said, “Yes, but for YOUR car it specifies 5W30 for street use and 10W50 for track use.” They then went on to warn me that I would void my warranty by using the 0W40 ESP, particularly on the track.

I understand their confusion. GM needs to fix the updated oil requirement/recommendation in their computer system with regard to all C7s except the ZR1, which still requires 10W50 on the track.

Even Tadge, in response to a question about the new oil, reiterated that 0W40 ESP was appropriate for full-time use on all C7s except the ZR1. He said they worked with Mobil1 to specifically reduce cold start engine wear and to eliminate the need for oil changes between street and track use and vice versa. He did specify it has to be the 0W40 ESP and NOT the 0W40 European blend, which isn’t Dexos2.

Ultimately the dealer used the 0W40 ESP I insisted upon and that’s what I’ll be using from here on out. They even sold me a couple extra quarts to take home.

How many days did it take for your dealership to get the oil?

 

In April, 2018 GM released service bulletin #18-NA-129 that authorizes the use of 0W-40 in ALL '14-19 Corvettes, except the ZR1

Did the spring oil change on Mr. Cash today. Great day to spend in the garage, 10” of wet sloppy snow the last 2 days, hopefully Mother Nature will turn the page for us. Anyhow, I used up my “free” oil changes from Chevy and did this one myself. Relatively simple once you can safely get under the car. Went the 0w-40 Mobil 1 ESP route with a PF64 Delco filter. Ordered all off of Amazon along with the new oil cap which is a GM part. Thanks to all who have given out good information and advice for those of us not as schooled in all things Corvette. Yet.......

 

Do you know the GM part number for the
Mobil 1 0W-40 cap? I only see 5W-30 caps

 

How ironic...After listening to my service tech say that they use the oil that is noted on the oil filler cap and me having to persistently tell him that is not the oil that I wanted used, I order the exact same cap for my Z06. It came in the mail today.

 

I had a 0W-40 oil cap on my Z06 when I took it to the local dealership for an oil change. According to the receipt I was given they used the 0W-40 oil that I directed to be used. They charged $9.30/quart for the oil (GM 19353135) but somehow the oil filler cap had magically morphed into a 5W-30 oil cap when the car was returned. My fault for not checking immediately and it was over three weeks before I noticed the substitution. I'll still go to that dealership but both I and the service writer will agree that the 0W-40 cap is on the car when the car goes in for service and when the service is completed. A new 0W-40 oil cap costs $38 and I'd rather not buy another one.

Gentleben, I believe the 0-40 oil cap I purchased off Amazon was $13 and is a genuine GM part.

 

I'm sure that you are correct but the cap (GM 12680708) that I purchased was the one recommended by Harlan Charles, who is the Corvette Product Marketing Manager.

Unfortunately, the cap was supposed to be delivered today but the USPS says that it cannot be delivered due to an incomplete address. I will not name the supplier at this time as I will give them another (and final) chance on Monday to correct the error and send me a new cap while the original one is being returned to them via the selfsame USPS system.

Wrong Oil



Sorry to tell you this, but the Mobil 1 0W40 motor oil on the Costco website is NOT the Mobil 1 0W40 formulated for your Corvette. It is the European blend designed for use in European brands only. The Mobil 1 0W40 designed for the Corvette is ESP 0W40 and has Dexos on the label. I have attached a photo of the label on a quart for reference. DO NOT use the European blend in your Corvette. It is not Dexos 2 certified and doesn’t have the same temperature rating as the ESP 0W40.

ACDelco FC265 is the oil cap that has the Mobil1 0w-40 dexos branding on it. The “dexos” is not visible in the photo of the product on the web due to the angle the picture is taken, but it IS on the cap. Currently priced at $10

 

0W-40 Mobil 1 - Oil Cap Part Numbers

The official GM part numbers for the new oil caps are:
• 12686472 – 2019 Corvette Stingray w/o Z51
• 12680708 – 2019 Corvette Stingray w/Z51, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR1
We checked around online and the new oil cap part numbers are starting to show up in various Chevrolet/GM official parts websites. We found them starting at the low price of $6.45 at ChevroletOnlineParts (The Stingray Z51/Grand Sport/Z06/ZR1 oil cap is priced at $23.12). These prices DO NOT INCLUDE SHIPPING. When I checked for mine, $6.45 + $11.00 shipping. I saved $8.33 by getting it at the local dealer a mile from my office.

JoeCT you would need the 12680708 cap. My Vette is a non Z51 and I picked up the cap at my local dealer for $9.12 out the door. They had to order it and it came in the next day.

 

Just a reminder to those of you planning on replacing your filler caps: the caps are NOT interchangeable between a base wet sump and the dry sump Z51, GS, Z06 and ZR1. As CruznCorvette noted in his post #28, they are different part numbers.

 

Here in the Phoenix are, I've found exactly one source for the Mobil 1 OW-40, that's Freeway Chevrolet. No other dealer or auto parts store has it, even the ones who are self-proclaimed Corvette specialists. I used it for the last change on my '15 Z51 and for the 500 mile oil change on the '19 Camaro. I'll get some more as soon as the Z06 arrives as well; maybe lay in some inventory at home. I'm wondering if this thin supply line will improve anytime, and what if the C8 spec is for something different?

The new recommended oil for the C7 Corvette is Mobil1 0w40 Dexos 2.
So after doing some online searches and calling a few places, no one carries this weight of oil, Walmart has the european spec for Porsche, BMW, etc. "Not for the C7".
So I reached out to Mobil1 and inquired when will this product reach the supply chain of Walmart, and the parts store chains.

Here is their response - Thanks for writing in. Can I assume that you have a (2014-2019) Corvette? The situation with the ESP 0W-40 is that at the moment, it's a low demand item and it is only for C7 Corvettes. As such, it will be difficult to find on the shelf. However, if you give the part store our Mobil part number 123875, they will be able to order it for you. It might save you some time if you ask to speak to a manager. They should have a better understanding of their company's supply chain system with regard to new products that they've not yet carried in-store.

Due to the confusion between the ESP European blend, which will damage your Corvette catalytic converter, and the ESP Dexos 2, recommended for the C7 non-ZR1and factory fill on the C8 Stingray, Mobil1 has rebranded the ESP Dexos 2. It is now Mobil1 Supercar. The name Supercar is in an orangish-yellow rectangle.
