At the risk of being sarcastic, we heard months ago that the rail shipping delayed would be mostly cleared by April. Then a month ago we heard it would be mostly cleared by June. Today, we just learned that rail shipping delays will be mostly cleared by July. While Corvettes are not mentioned, perhaps we have become used to excessive delays months ago, and now are just dealing with lengthy delays -- up to one month for some Corvettes going by rail to the West Coast.

That phrase is getting old, and even if it were to occur, it still means that some rail shipping delays will not be cleared until August. Pathetic!

With the unexpectedly harsh winter of 2013-2014, rail service was hit for much of the U.S. and Canada. Even though all the snow has melted, there are rows of cars and crossovers fresh off Lansing-area assembly lines filling lots across town.

The Lansing State Journal reports that the backlog began to grow in March, with PHH Arval, a Sparks, Maryland-based fleet management firm stating that there was a rail-car shortage of 2,500 cars—up from 1,000 a year ago.

General Motors has agreements with owners of lots to store their vehicles there during the backlog, plus GM is making use of property that it once owned, such as the old Fisher Body plant. The property is now owned by RACER Trust, which was created during GM’s 2009 bankruptcy to manage the company’s closed or demolished plants.

General Motors spokeswoman Erin Davis says GM has relied more on trucks than trains to move its products during the spring. She adds that vehicles destined for local and Michigan dealerships already are trucked from Lansing, but it’s possible dealerships out of state that rely on rail have experienced shortages. Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia crossovers, and Cadillac ATS and CTS models are the ones affected.

In a statement, General Motors said it is “taking steps to ensure that our dealers and more importantly our customers are not affected by this situation” and expects the backlog to be “mostly cleared” by July.

Is there not a way that we can set up a thread that can at least do rail car tracking? It seems rediculous that customers have this limbo period where nothing can be determined about their expensive purchase while it is on route. I understand that there maybe safety issues etc involved with the rail companies, but some sort of spl. clearance by the web people ie:(Stingray Forums) could get info for the customer both Canadian and American this time durring it's (the car) travels.

Any thoughts elegant, Super Moderator?

How about someone who did that successfully, tracked their car during its "rail around the country" journey," please giving us a detailed step-by-step "how to," (sorry if it is here; searched and missed it), and then all could subsequently document their car's cross-country progress.

Have PM'd a member who successfully tracked four cars by rail and asking it he would please do that for us all.

Found this but not sure its what you're looking for. Might work.

First and most important. Never talk to live personnel at the railroad! Only use automated phone system. If it attempts to transfer you to a live person please hang up. The railcar information provided by GM is given as a courtesy. Keep in mind these automated systems are not intended to be used by the public but for use by those in the logistics business that use them daily, all day long.

CSX:
1. The chevy customer service folks or dealer should be able to provide the rail car # and it looks like ETTX######. This may be in GM global connect under history, ask them to look for a value starting in ETTX to help them.
2. Call CSX at 1-800-235-2352
3. When prompted for location or weight, press 1 on your phone for location
3. When prompted for the car initials, either say 'ETTX' or press 32-81-81-92 and wait
4. When prompted for the 6-digit car number, say or key-in your 6 digit ETTX car number
5. When prompted for the next car, either say 'Done' or press the pound sign (#) twice

Union Pacific:
1. Call UP at 1 800 877-5123 1 800 877-5123
2. Follow phone prompts for Trace
3. Say the railcar number complete and clearly. Example ETTX123456 all together
4. Listen for your update

Have also heard of customers having their dealer activate ONSTAR and tracking the vehicle that way. Not sure how that works or if it is possible but read people have said they tracked their car this way while on rail.

You know..... Tracking your cars adventurous travels by rail across the U.S. isn't going to make it appear any faster and all this kinda reminds me of watching the minute hand on a clock or watching paint dry. It's torturous! Oh how I wish GM could provide us with an option of arranging and having our cars transported by private carrier's protected by the elements in enclosed trailers like Intercity Lines..... At our own expense of course.... Flexibility is golden...
