Wow, what a day that was!
My wife Maureen and I picked up our new TR , Z51, Convertible yesterday at the National Corvette Museum and it was everything I was expecting and a little more. After having been through the experience once I do have some recommendations for those who have not been there yet. First it was a very FULL day. We had a 10:30 start time, I would change this if I could do it over again and get the 08:30 delivery time if available so we would not feel rushed. We arrived at the Museum parking lot around 10:00 and spent about 15 minutes taking pictures outside. This was a mistake on our part as we entered through the doors we were met by our guide who knew who we were and immediately showed us to a conference room where we watched a video with several other new owners. Apparently they will start the process as soon as everyone is there and ready to go.

The plant tour was awesome and we were able to see quite a bit of the assembly process. There were two areas that we did not go into and that was where the engines were mated to the torque tube and rear assembly. We were told that these areas were eliminated from the tour about three months ago at the request of the UAW safety committee. We did see one general public tour and we stepped aside so that they could pass us. We never saw them again. We were able to linger at different areas of interest and several employees engaged us in conversation. They all seemed to be very pleasant and happy to be working on these beautiful vehicles. You could see the pride they took in their work.

The museum tour was great as well and seeing the sinkhole and all of the recovered cars was very interesting and sobering. Several of the cars were un recognizable to me as to what they originally were. Out tour guide was very knowledgeable and thorough. It was an enjoyable experience for all of us.

We arrived in Nashville on Tuesday night the day before our delivery and we spent a very enjoyable night at the Bluebird Café listening to Cactus Honey. This was a fantastic show but you need to make reservations way ahead as it only seats 100 people. If I were to do this again I would spend an extra night in Nashville and then drive to Bowling Green the day before the actual delivery so you can get to the museum by 0830. I will post more about our adventure as time permits.

The Car

All the adjectives used previously to describe this car are true. It is fantastic! We have spent about five hours and 275 miles so far and the car handles and rides beautifully. The power and torque is electric and it allows you to power out of corners in a gear that should be lugging the engine. But this car just pulls and it pulls hard when you slightly open the throttle. I cant wait to really stand on it! About the ride, I have a Z51 with the magnetic ride shocks, and I have been reading all these posts about people being concerned about the ride quality. All I can say is don't worry, this car rides like a dream! It is taut as a sports car should be but it is never harsh or abrupt, but it never wallows around either like a soft suspension car does. I am not saying the base suspension wallows or doesn't handle well all I'm saying is the Z51 Mag ride handles wonderfully with absolutely no harshness. Yesterday we drove from Bpwling Green to Loretto to tour the Makers Mark distillery and we got off the freeway early to take the scenic drive. We drove through some beautiful country on a two lane country road with a lot of twisites mixed in with nice straight sections of road. The C7 handled this road with amazing accuracy and was a joy to drive. I still cant get the smile off my face.
Everywhere we went we were greeted with waves and thumbs up and comments galore. Last night we drove into downtown Nashville to go to Tootsies and we were lucky to get a parking spot right on Broadway where we could watch the car from the rooftop café. I was amazed at how many people stopped with their cameras to take pictures of her sitting on the street.
Today the adventure continues. Automotive design Vehicle Car Red Motor vehicle

Beautiful car! Congratulation!! Enjoy the drive!!
Hey Smokey12! How's the journey? We've been thinking about you allot. We're getting real close ourselves. I hope the car is still performing well.

More observations about the car

Yesterday we put on an additional 350 miles on the car bringing us to 625+ miles. One thing that stands out to us is the comfort of the seats, they are wonderful! We both suffer from low back problems so this was really important to us as our daily well being depends on the condition of the back. Driving can be miserable for us if our backs are acting up and a poor seating condition can bring this on. We felt GREAT after spending several hours in the car between breaks. These seats are very supportive yet comfortable, they sort of encompass you and everything in the "cockpit" is within easy reach. You really do feel like you are in an airplane cockpit the way GM has placed everything within easy reach.
We drove the first 500 miles in Sport Mode doing a fair amount of city driving with highway driving. I did keep her under 4500 rpm but I also did a couple of WOT sessions in second and third gears letting the engine braking being the car back down to speed. All of this and we still averaged 21.6 mpg! amazing. Yesterday I used Touring and some Eco mode on the freeways at a speed of 70 to 80 MPH and we averaged over 26 MPG. Pretty impressive considering the speeds and gear selections I was using.
I love the sound of the exhaust note especially in Sport mode. I will have to fool around with the settings today to see how to leave the exhaust open while in Touring mode.
The past couple of days have been pretty busy for us and it has been hard to find the time to post. Last Saturday we left Little Rock for Oklahoma City and put on an additional 335 fun filled miles. The car is a dream to drive and really tracks down the road extremely well. I did not notice any hint of pull to either side of the road and it stays straight and true even under hard braking. The power is intoxicating and it pulls hard from low rpm's and really comes alive around 3000 rpm.
We pulled into Oklahoma City expecting to spend the next day visiting the memorial when we found out that they expected golf ball sized hail the next afternoon. Yikes what a nightmare! We got up early the next day, spent a few minutes at the memorial and headed out of town as fast as the law allowed. After putting a few hundred miles behind us and the storm clouds I started to breathe again. We hit Amarillo pretty early on Sunday and when I checked the weather I saw that snow was forecast for Monday morning so we decided to push on through to Albuquerque. This morning we left Albuquerque and drove to Flagstaff and I had a few opportunities to run her up well past the posted limit and we saw Mach 1 several times. This car is incredible at speed as there is no indication of your speed other than the speedometer. The car is solid as a rock even with high crosswinds that were pushing everything else around we just glided through. At one point I told Maureen what our speed was and she just looked at me in disbelief and said I swear it feels like 60. We have 1800 miles on her now and I have yet to have any issues other than you have to watch the speedometer closely because your actual speed is so deceptive without the car giving any hint of the actual speed. What a nice ride!

I love this post! I'm glad the alignment is good and the car tracks extremely well without any pull, staying straight and true even under hard braking. The torque curve sounds great! Be safe, and keep outrunning those storms!
Somehow I missed this post until just now. Great write up and exactly what I needed. I am 48 hours away from my pick up in Atlantic City so this helps me get thru the day!

I wanted to add to my first post a few remarks about luggage space. We brought 2 Samsonite 21" carry on's, these are the spinner type so they each have four wheels sticking out the bottom. Their height wasn't the problem as they will fit end to end laying on their side. However they are too wide laying on their side to allow the hatch to close by about 2 inches. So we had to lower the flap that keeps the soft top area clear and lay our suitcases flat on their backs side to side. This left enough room between them to slide a small duffel ( gym) bag between them. This area is pretty deep so the bags almost disappear in this spot only hanging into the trunk space a few inches. This left plenty of room for a small soft sided cooler, our 35mm canon, a small ladies handbag, my backpack with laptop, a couple of bottles of Makers mark, and other assorted items we have been collecting along the way.
The only downside is the top must stay up due to the size of the luggage. I an pretty happy with this trunk space and I never have trouble closing a hatch :)

That's good information. Makes me think our duffel bags will be the right choice on our trip.

I agree Michael. Smokey, there is no way my 'vert top will not be down most of our week long voyage. I just ran up to the attic and measured my carry on, it is about 14" wide, and about 21-22" long. So you're saying these will fit placed on their backs end to end, but they are too wide to put the top down? Hoping yours are wider than mine which is why you had this issue. Please let me know what the max width that could fit with top down. Thanks!

I have had a chance to measure our bags and I took a few photos of the trunk with luggage in it. The bags measure 23" tall when standing and are 15" wide and 11" deep. The will fit laying on their backs with the top down, but just barely. As you can see in the picture there is hardly any room left between them and the hatch. There is a small space below the top that you could slide a garment bag or other flat items, sat no more that approx. 4-5" thick.

I hope this helps.

Ken it's great to hear from you! Are you home? I tell you we're really getting excited. Only a week to go. I really liked your post regarding the comfort of driving. We gained a lot of great insight from your journal. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Michael
Ken,

Your write up was great! I wanted to hear the full monty, so I hope you've made it home now. Can't wait to see you and Maureen in person 4/27!

Michael, what is your pick up date? When will you be home after that?

Cheers,
Thanks for the pics!!!! For months I have been waiting for somebody to post something like that. Now I feel more prepared. Two carry-ons and a garment bag. She can put her purse on the floor directly in front of the seat below her legs.
Congratulations!!!!

Our date is 4/28 @10:30. It's getting very surreal.

We should be home by 5/9 or 5/10. Gonna take a couple weeks to drive home.
