Hello,

I have an assigned parking space in a lot. I recently got a new parking neighbor who, instead of backing in, pulls in. This puts their door such that they must open it toward my car. There are virtually inches between the cars and I can barely get out without touching the car next to me, though I do.

Does anyone have any ideas of a way to put something (not magnetic of course :) ) on the surfaces that are likely to be bumped by the other driver? I can control my behavior but not theirs.

I am actually thinning of buying "bubble wrap," measuring where the door of the other vehicle would hit mine, use double stick tape, and put it on when I leave the car, then roll it up into the trunk when I leave.

I am looking for some kind of commercial product that does this and is invisible when removed.

I know what may happen and I am just trying to ward off what might be inevitable.

Many thanks.

Find out who your new neighbor is and make friends with them. See if you can convince them to back into their space over the nice lunch that you just bought them. :D

I get a 3/4" rod about 4' long and cover it with foam pipe insulation then hang it so it is horizontal between the places where the door might hit. It can move out of the way but still protects the door from damage.

You can do a similar thing with those swimming "noodles"

I say this jokingly but it would be kinda funny...Lay a S&W Model 29 44 mag in the driver's seat with a note saying... "Love my car...ALOT!

You know, while I am laughing at the photos also, we should not have to spend 5 min or 10 minutes etc every time we park our car at work to keep it safe. The other person should know the situation and respect it. But this is a real world and those kinds of things don't necessarily happen on a day to day basis. You can leave him a note and ask him to leave you a can opener next time so you can get into your car. Keep the can opener in case you have to write him a note on his door one day. hmmmm. Tempting but not good I know. Those bumper door guards in the first photo are available at most car stores or parts stores. Kind of decorative but would probably do the trick. Or, the best idea is just try and move to another spot unless of course this one is the best available . I worry for you bud....... I made up a buisness card size note to leave on cars that do that to me. "Thanks for parking so F-----g close, next time leave a can opener for me to get in my car." (A------e) I hope this is acceptable for posting.

At least if you have assigned spots, you know who will be parking next to you all the time. I would chat with him/her and let them know how worried you are about damage to your car, and let them know you will keep an eye out for their car if they could please do the same for you.

This would appear to be the most effective and even probably cheapest option! You should think yourself lucky that you get to park next to the same person every day and can therefore actively manage the situation, instead of being like the rest of us and at the mercy of random chance! Maybe even take them to said lunch in the Stingray :)

I would worry that the door protectors and the like would invite more trouble than they would prevent.

Bingo! If the person is nice, you have won a new friend. If they are nasty, you know who to go blame if they ding it (and they know that you know who they are, so they will be extra careful). Either way, talking to them nicely will get the job done.
