It seems that my rear brakes were stuck this morning. Strong odor while driving, AFM would not activate at all on the freeway. I pulled over, reset the parking brake and pumped the pedal. That seemed to help. I get the hot brake smell now coming from the rears even after driving less than a mile. Anybody else experience this?

Chip is your best bet here for knowing the answer to your question. Personally, this is a new one for me to hear about.

Sounds like the ebrake is way out of adjustment. A trip to the dealer is in order and I would request quite strongly that once they diagnose and fix the ebrake issue they replace the pads and rotors under warranty.

jbly17,

My sincere apologies to read of your displeasing rear brake concerns. Although you're seeking thoughts and opinions, if you feel an official GM diagnosis is necessary, I'd be happy to communicate your sentiments with the Customer Experience Managers (CEM) at the GM dealer of your choice. Please know that you're welcome to message us privately if you'd like to proceed (with the above), or discuss this situation further.

I have heard of others with this problem and it was the electronic brake that was the cause of the problem. I don't recall exactly (replacement of a faulty control module?) what was done to fix it, but I think it was a quick fix. Of course the heat that was generated could have compounded the problem. Let us know what your dealer does to fix it and hopefully you will have no further problems.

Any updates?

So, after inspection and testing by the dealer the brakes seem to not be dragging. E-brake works properly, the tech drove the car and took the temp on the rotors which were within spec I guess. However, there is a strong burning smell still coming from the rear. They are replacing the pads and maybe the rotors from what the service adviser told me. I have owned this car for three months, and it has been in the shop all but three weeks of it. That is not an exaggeration. Granted, it was mostly for rattles (Passenger door panel replaced, center AC vent replaced, rear cargo area had to be re-insulated, body panel issues and paint peeling(alignment), paint cracking in the door jambs, nav screen went kaput, rear tire blew out, and now rear brakes. I hope for all your sakes I am just unlucky. I am so dissatisfied. I have totally fallen out of love with this car. To clarify, every one of my 9 or so visits have taken a week or longer and on two occasions I had to drive with a tech and re-produce my concerns within minutes; after a week without being able to duplicate concerns, and on two occasions had to return to have a previous issue that was said to be taken care of re-taken care of because nothing had been done. This is now a rant..LOL Sorry dudes, this is just becoming too much.

"jbly17," sorry to hear that. Understand that your car is perennially ill. I understand that some cars are like that, i.e., having a brand new BMW that was in the shop 11 times for the same motor problem, and finally, bought back by them. Is it time for you to explore with your dealer that you want your car bought back in full?

Since another member got his bought back for an oil leak that could have been fixed by a competent dealership, I would certainly think this car would be bought back if you pursued that route. Get the name and contact number for your GM Regional Manager from your dealership and get him involved. Put this one out to pasture and get you a new one. You should also be due 3 months worth of car payments as well.

A few questions; So did the brake pads show abnormal wear? Did they comment on the smell? If the smell is not coming from the brakes, perhaps it's source if the rear diff? I can sure understand your frustration, maybe it's time to punt!

Based on what the service adviser told me, the only thing that was abnormal by the time they were able to inspect, was the smell coming from the brakes. All temperature readings were within spec. No lazy or stuck calipers etc. He did not state that he had any suspicion that the smell may be coming from somewhere other than the brakes. He did not comment on the state of the pads or the rotors except that he suspected the smell had something to do with the composition of the pads. The pads were subsequently replaced and the rotors machined. I am pretty miffed about that. I think the rotors should have been replaced. Now, their service life has been shortened.

It had occurred to me that the rear end could be doing some crazy business.......although I am mostly certain that what happened was that the electronic emergency brake did not disengage via the switch or throttle application that morning. Because once I pulled over and pressed the button, the DIC said parking brake disengaged even though the indicator light for the brake was not illuminated. Or something to that effect.

I have had this same scenario with the smell and dragging brakes. My parkingbrake doesn't set and release correctly lately either. I'm returning to the dealer this Wednesday to sees what becomes of it. This all began within the last week. I have 1600 miles on my car.

regarding my e-brake not setting/releasing at times…
i took my car in today, and they took diagnostic codes. they say it appears there may be some miscommunication within the module for the e-brake. they have ordered a new part, and shall replace it when the part arrives. i also informed tem of my concern with the wear on existing parts from this occuring, and they are going to remove the rear calipers, rotors, e-braakes assemblies…etc. if any parts are looking worn, damaged, warped, etc; they are replacing them as well.
My dealership that i purchased this car from has been amazing! from the day of the order, through the first oil change, to phone assist with any/every thing. i will update as the repairs are made and see if they havce any further info on anything going on. as of today, they had no record of incidents of this type in their system.

If you can see if you can find out which module was replaced and its part number. Glad to hear they took care of you!
