Rough Idle

Just picked up my Stingray yesterday, it's an A8 base. It has a little bit of a rough idle. I don't know if this is typical for a brand new C7 or not. (or typical for Corvette in general) My previous car was a Lexus where the engine was smooth as glass so I don't know if I'm being overly sensitive to it. Right now I'm chalking it up to a new engine that's breaking in.

Has anyone else experienced this? At speed I don't notice any roughness.

A kick ass big hp sports car is exactly what I want. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything I needed to be worried about. I pretty much figured it had to do with type of engine. The rumbling is starting to grow on me.

I'm back and forth between my C7 and the wife's Lexus frequently and understand the difference you're feeling. Like Glen said, it's normal. I would actually like an aftermarket camshaft for even more "shake" at idle. ;)

Brett...I'm experiencing the same thing. Thanks Glen for clearing this up. My Z51 A8 doesn't do it all the time but when it does, it sounds like the engine is gasping for air and there are times I think the engine is going to stop. Although I've never done it, it makes me want to put the car in neutral and rev the engine to keep it running

That's exactly what mine does. Most of the time it's minor but one time I did think the engine was going to die. I'm going to be taking it in to have the windows tinted so I'll ask a tech to check it out. According to Chips' post it could be a problem.

I have noticed the same thing with mine on occasion. It was not to the point it felt like it was going to stall, but a fluctuation of 50-100 RPM's. There is quite a noticeable shake however.

At how many RPMs do peoples' StingRays idle? They may be set low to increase fuel economy. If set too low, it could cause them to have a rough idle.

So, for you guys with rough idle versus those with more normal idles, what are each of your idle RPMs?

Different factors can change the idle such as if in ECO mode, A/C, etc
but base idle commanded is dictated as what the coolant temp is or MPH if coming down to idle as seen in your PCM idle tables

So as seen the colder engine is the higher RPMs PCM commands and slants down as water temps increase

I'll have to check my RPM idle the next time I have it out and see how much fluctuation there is. Waiting for the weather to break and for the temp to climb above 40.

Chip is correct. But these engines with obver 10-15k miles are also developing a rough idle in addition to the slight mount vibration due to the coking of the intake valves causing uneven air distribution at idle. This is overcome as soon as a higher RPM is reached when the velocity of air can overcome the disrupted shape, but get's worse as the coking deposits build. For a new one, or one with low miles I would look at the service Chip shows as there will not be enough deposits to affect it.

The link in the post is nearly 4 years old and apparently taken down at some time in the past. Enjoy your new (for you) C7- put some miles on it, new gas (91 octane), and have fun.
