Yes, you can change to any setting while moving. Eco gives you cylinder deactivation, weather gives you slower reaction to throttle, tour smooths out the ride, sport and track just stiffen things up a bit.

Short answer: yes, no problem. This table should help:

 

Good chart. As it shows AFM always on with auto transmission in D. You have two ways to shutoff Afm. Auto transmission select manual and use paddle shifter. AFM deactivated. Or purchase a plug in module for under dash diagnosis plug.

 

To answer your question. You can switch modes any time.

The difference between Sport and Track depends on what car you have.

If you have Magnetic ride the Track mode is stiffer than sport and that is stiffer than Tour.

The steering is similar. Tour -Easy, Sport-Stiffer and Track-Heavy

Exhaust changes if you have that option. Quite, nice and sort of loud

You can lock the steering, Ride and sound in anyone of the modes and it will still let the other modes change with the knob.



In my case I always locked the steering in sport along with the sound. I let the mag ride change with the mode switch. Most times I drove in Sport but on rough roads use tour. I only used Track mode on very smooth roads or at the track.

I prefer the Track mode when cornering at double the suggested speed, e.g. 60mph on a 30mph curve. Very small difference from Touring but you can tell if you run back-to-back. I've never used the other modes.

Cylnder deactivation only happens when you are at a constant speed, any acceleration activates all cylinders. In Sport and track, the steering suspension, acceleration response are heightened.

 

Cylinder deactivation has two settings. Eco wide band of throttle load parameters, less changes vs all other modes narrows parameters more activation. Sport track steering progressive removal of assist stiffening stearing

Have you had any mechanical problems as a result of using Economy? There have been comments that Economy creates valve problems if you use it often.

 

Internet myth. The very early GM AFM systems had issues, but that's not been the case for many years. Yes, the AFM lifters fail rarely. So do any other hydraulic lifters. There are literally millions of GM small block V8s with AFM lifter in them. If there were a real problem, you'd be hearing about it every day.

 

I have not personally, but have seen incidents of valves being destroyed. I choose not to use it.

It must be a problem that Chevrolet inherited from Cadillac. Is that on the C8 as well as the C7? If it is on the C8, you would think the issue would have been resolved.

To keep things in perspective, there were 189,507 C7s produced and no recall was every required by NHTSA or voluntarily by GM because of the cylinder deactivation technology in the respective engines. Certainly there are individuals who have had valve failures, but relative to the number of C7s it has not risen to a point of systemic concern about Active Fuel Management (AFM) on our cars.

Might feel differently if you had to spend $19k to replace engine and go through the blow up event on road and four weeks awaiting replacement with no help from GM.

 

And you know for a fact it was because of AFM? Engines have blown up for multiple reasons since the invention of the ICE, long before AFM was even a thought.

 

I change drive modes from time to time while I am driving. I like the way it holds the lower gear longer when I am in sport mode and blip the throttle.

Running in L 10 with the Sierra 6.2 it does both.

 

But if you never use cylinder deactivation, you will never have the issue. And any savings in mpg is very minimal.

What is it that you have for sale?

 

As I write this, my 2015 C7 is in the shop getting Corsa exhaust, AFE cold air intake, and a tune. I've told them to tune out the AFM, which I hate. About a year ago, I heard a rattling noise and couldn't figure where it was coming from. I decided to install one of the inexpensive AFM disablers you plug into the OBD port simply to eliminate the AFM function, which it did. Low and behold, the rattling stopped. I'm guessing it was the lifters. Can't convince me that this AFM nonsense does anything but make a mess of your engine.
