Back in 1967 I had reenlisted in the Navy and bought a Plymouth Belvedere I with a big block and 4 speed. I had flown my wife and new baby ahead to Wichita Falls where we would visit my parents before going to Christchurch, New Zealand on Navy orders. The day I graduated from Radioman "B" school (Bainbridge, MD) and I headed home on my own. I remember pulling out of Washington, DC and driving the Shenandoah Parkway and then on south through the Blue Ridge mountains. It was an amazing trip constantly shifting gears to maneuver curves and hills. I am now 76 and always wanted to take my wife on the same trip. We have a 2016 Z51 LT2. I would like to take the C7 but I am reaching out to you guys to see what you think. I know it is a comfortable car on the road but with speed limits of around 45 mph would it be a great road trip? I know the old saying about you can never go back but we either make the trip in the C7 or my wife's mini van! I would like some thoughts. I am guessing someone has made the trip in a Corvette.

If you, and especially your wife, have taken extended rides in your Z51 and found you are comfortable then I would encourage you to do it in the Z51. Depending on the weather, you could stow the roof panel in the trunk and enjoy the beauty of the drive. A number of members have taken long trips including cross country in their Stingrays and had a blast.

Would it be enjoyable? It all depends on what you expect. Park police enforcement can be pretty heavy, and the officers have zero sense of humor when it comes to excessive speed (5 or 6 over won't be an issue, but 10 might be. Anything over that is almost certainly a ticket). So if blasting down a curvy road is what you're looking for, probably not the place to do it.

But if a leisurely drive with beautiful scenery will be enjoyable, then yes, you can have a very nice drive.

And there are other roads in the general area you could take a side trip too for a little more fun. Cherahola Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, etc.

Even at 45 mph, the Corvette's got to be more fun than a minivan!

At 76, if this is a bucket list for you and your wife then I suggest that you live and enjoy these types of moments while you can if your Health also allows.

You said: “I am now 76 and always wanted to take my wife on the same trip”. That is priceless too me and don’t not do it and then wish that you had when you had the opportunity.

Thank you, and our health is great but time is flying.....

Remember it's the journey, not the destination. Settle in and enjoy the ride. Stop in the neighboring towns. There are 2 inns actually ON the parkway these are great stops. If you start in VA and end in NC you are at the entrance to the GSMNP - one of the most visited. Lots of scenery and things to do there as well... Drive across to TN - Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, etc. You could spend a lot of time exploring.

Every spring my wife and I venture up to Asheville for our Wedding anniversary. And I always travel the Blue Ridge Parkway as far south as the Pisgah mountains and north as far as Boone. Stopping along the way at the scenic pull offs and any new Microbrewery I can discover. I've made the trip in a Murano and a Vette. If you are traveling for the scenery, any vehicle will do. If you want to have a driving experience, well a Vette is a great memory maker. As far as the speed limit concerns, save the high speed maneuvers for the track or a super slab. Pop the top and just enjoy the scenery. Be prepared to answer questions about your vehicle (assuming you're piloting your Vette), whenever you visit a pull off. Same applies to Skyline Drive in Va, another beautiful place to revisit. I'm in the Old Guy club as well, and as long as I can get in and out of my Vette, I'll continue to make new driving memories.

Mike, I live in Wichita Falls now. I’m 62 and me & my wife just got back from a 2,500 mile road trip in our 2014 Z51. AR, TN, KY, IN, IL, MO, OK, then back into TX. The only complaint I had the whole trip was it got harder & harder to fit everything back in the car every morning when we would leave a hotel. After the trip, I would not hesitate to go on a longer trip. One of our other cars would have been roomier & quieter, but no way would it have been as much fun.

Take your Stingray. It will be a wonderful drive.
Take some side trips; Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggy Valley. The Biltmore Estate in Asheville and The Tail of the Dragon, Oak Ridge Laboratory etc, etc. Take your time and have a good time. The C7 is the perfect GT car..

We have a 2015 Z51 3LT and have driven it to our sons in the extreme SE corner of GA a couple of times and out east to NEPA. I love traveling/driving our baby!!!! WAY better ride than my Lincoln MKZ and I loved that car before the Vette. We have the transparent roof so I can lay back and still see the sky!!! BTW, I had a ‘63 Belvedere given to me used when I got my license, way back in the ah hm days. It had an oval steering wheel and push button dash and I could still burn rubber with that baby!!! Pack your bags, Take your wife, go to the gas station and fill up and head south!!!! Did Tail of the Dragon by accident after being rerouted. Considering the Triple Nickel now with the Vette and our friends!

I grew up in Roanoke, Virginia so I know the parkways well. I would take my C7 in a heartbeat. You just have to drive 45 mph for days on end. So if you’re not in a hurry………..
