I like to check our forum and other vette websites just to see what sort of trends I can find. I am seeing a couple of issues that have had more than a single occurrence. I am throwing them up here so that if anyone here has the same issue we can have it posted in our “issues & resolution” forum. I have spotted a couple of issues that are worrisome.
Base and Z-51 cars are still experiencing problems that require a rear diff replacement. I cannot tell if the cars affected were only those early low VIN cars with low lube or not? From what I’ve read the lack of proper lube level can kill a diff. pretty quickly.

Another issue that I am starting to see is that several owners of manual tranny equipped cars are reporting that their shifter moves hard into neutral as the tranny kicks out of gear. I have not seen follow ups on these reports and will see what happens and follow up here.

Lastly, there seems to be more issues with the infotainment screen going blank. A new owner of a convertible owner has reported issues with his doing this.

Window indexing

I am now seeing a few "window indexing" complaints.
"Window goes up, touches the top and goes back down. The only way to get it to close is to hold the switch as the window goes up and then release. My car is at the dealer's for a different issue but they said they would check the window closing issue while there. They though it might be a sensor."

Passenger side floor carpet rise

I've seen a couple of complaints about this issue.
"I received my car in mid January and it's been sitting in the garage while I wait for some reasonable weather. While getting familiar with it I noticed that the carpeting, on the passenger side in front of the seat under the floor mat, has a noticeable rise in it. When you push down, it pops back up like it a bubble. Is the carpeting glued or supposed to adhere to the floor pan? My dealer tells me that they are all like that and that is the way they come from the factory."

Engine Knock

This is scary, but so far as I am aware a "one off". I will update as soon as more is known.
"1,800 Mile Engine Tick
Well, I'm a little concerned. The engine now has a tick that can easily be heard 100ft away and makes driving around sound like an old beat up Nissan Stanza is coming up on you.
This just started happening this morning. Ticking remains the same at cold start-up and after my 35 mile commute. Any ideas on what it could be?"

RedHot has what I would describe as a light tick that can be heard on start up while in the garage (ie, sound amplified and reflecting off of garage walls). Certainly can't be heard under normal circumstances. Though I find it hard to fathom judging from the audio in the video shot of this "1,800 mile engine tick" that it could be heard "at 100 feet away and sound like a old beat up Nissan Stanza," if that is the case, take it into the dealer and let them check it out.

Something more serious is going on. Does it quite down after it warms up?

RADIO RECEPTION

I have put 200 miles on my car and I have to honestly say the sound quality and radio reception are very disappointing. My Infinity pulls in twice as many stations. The same stations in the C7 I can barely pull in. Is there an antenna on these cars because if there is it can use a boost. Anyone else have these opinions? I don't even listen to the radio it's so bad. Just my 2 cents.

I wonder with the popularity of satellite radio such as XM/Sirius that manufacturers are not paying as much attention to the old am/fm side of the radios. I know that I only rarely listen to am/fm stations anymore. Maybe they are going the way of the CD player?

Just read in the Infotainment Manual, page 17: Diversity Antenna System
The AM-FM antenna is a hidden self-tuning system. It optimizes the AM and FM signals relative to the vehicle's position and radio station source. No maintenance or adjustments are needed.

Thank you, Chip. I don't have the car yet, so I presently have no problems, but I think it is fabulous that you have all of these issue resolutions archived in one place so people can use it in the future if something does go wrong.

By the way, Chip, thank you a TON for all you do to help people out with what can sometimes be a very frustrating time when problems occur. Many thanks!

I now have a list worthy of a visit to the dealer.
1) Seat heaters are, well, shall we say weak at best (SSR heaters will practically burn your butt, no these)
2) Discover what appears to be an oil leak under the right front (approx 5000 miles). I'll get it up on the lift to see what's leaking.
3) This is the strange one. It only occurs on shifting from first to second. With the rev matching engaged, it will hold the rpm at the exit of first and let it drop when going into second. All other gears shift normally with the rpm dropping during the shift. With the rev match disengaged, upshifts are normal for all gears.

Engine oil leak

I received a site message from a forum member with a Z-51 and he passed along an issue he is having / had. I've have seen a couple of other reports from other dry sump car owners indicating that they have had a similar issue. We are trying to determine what the Bulletin he reported says in more detail. Thanks Buzzardz!

"Had an oil leak after running the car hard in 3rd and 4th gear on some windy roads in Track mode for the first time. Oil sprayed all over the engine bay. Dealer found oil in the air filter. Said it was blowing out of the crank shaft through the air filter. Dealer said there is a bulletin about it, #3750988. Warns of overfilling the oil, though I checked the oil right before going and it was at the top of the cross hatch. Also said it could be from running it hard before the break-in period, but my car has almost 2900 mile on it ad I followed the break-in instruction to the letter. Bulletin directed the dealer to remove the air filter assembly and clean it all out, replace the air filter and change the oil/oil filter. They also cleaned up the engine and the engine bay. Haven't had a chance to get under the car to see how well they did. Picked up the car and no more leaks so far, although, I'll need to take it out and run it hard to see if it starts leaking again."

Dry sumps tend to confuse a lot of people who aren't familiar with them. One rule I learned early on was to NEVER fill it to the top of the dip stick (if so equipped). I always try to keep it in the middle of the hash marks to allow for variations in the amount of oil stored in the tank based on when the oil level is measured. 99 times out of 100 dealer mechanics overfill dry sumps. Not knowing exactly what the bulletin says, my guess is it modifies the way a service tech checks the oil level on the Z51.

I was under the impression that the z51 does not have a oil dip stick? Read that somewhere in this forum months back??

I expected the stereo to sound better but perhaps the dynamics of the interior make it difficult to create a great sound environment. My 08 Suburban stereo blows it away....but a lot more cabin space and room for better speakers perhaps. But, I did not buy this car to listen to music!

Chip, I don't know much about the C6 but heat expansion with oil is neglidgable and the heat would be carried with the oil and would typically be a lot hotter than any radiant or convective heating the tank would get due to location. With close to 11 quarts in the system being even 1 quart low will have no effect on protection. A dry sump system is much less sensitive to oil level than a wet sump. I will run mine to the lowest reading on the dip stick to minimize blowback.

Based on this reported problem it must be sensitive to oil level to some extent. I wonder what the difference in oil quantity is between the low mark and the top mark of the dipstick?

Jeff; As far as I can tell it is both. There seems to be some correlation of owners coming out of, or into, the V-4 mode that brings on the failure. I kind of doubt that that alone is the failure mode, but do think there is a problem with this design. I do expect we will see many more failures until the part is re-engineered /redesigned.

I'm new here but I see that you've contributed so much Chip, I wanted to start by saying thanks for this. Thanks.
I took museum delivery a couple days ago & wanted to minimize the chances for failure driving the car brand new 350 miles from there to GA. I have an auto, Z51, & on this ride, concerned about proper break-in & minimizing failure, I kept it in 'M' manual-mode the whole ride. This forced v8 mode the whole way plus was a useful tool in keeping rpms dynamic. It cost a bit of gas mileage, I'd presume, but the last thing I thought the new engine breaking in needed was 4cyl mode so I forced it out. My belt seems ok, I just looked at it, I'll listen for the noise. JMO of course, but folks taking delivery of these cars might want to consider doing what I did, ie: disabling AFM early. I'll let it activate a couple times in the 1st few tanks, for a few minutes, but aside from that v8 mode exclusively.

DR; Thank you, I do what I can. I saw this issue last month and put up this: http://www.stingrayforums.com/forum/stingray-corvette-tsb-recalls/3463-failed-failing-serpentine-belt-tensioner.html

I wish I had a better sense of the "dynamics" imparted upon the engine and drive line during the transition into and out of the V-4 mode. It must be more severe than I had any reason to believe. As I indicated, some people have commented that their onset of this problem came after a V-4 cycle. Time will tell whether this holds up as being the case, or is just coincidental. I would like to verify the PIP bulletin #(5185) I have posted, as it looks a bit odd to me and I want to correct it if it is not a correct / valid number.

2014 Corvette Stringray defective torque tube

I am continuing to track this torque tube issue / failure which is killing engines or at least can if the TT is not removed and replaced correctly. I want to put up this video that is the best I've found at recording the sound that details clearly the failing / failed torque tube. I expect there will be some sort of TSB or at least a PI released on this and I should hope soon... I'll keep an eye open for it if it becomes available.

I did see that. It is also being reported on other forums as well. This is the sort of thing that concerns me. The talk from BG indicates that they are going to increase the production rate and yet these sorts of issues are getting by QC now. It begs the question: What might we expect in the future with the 2015's? This is only a rhetorical question, so let's not use this thread to answer that question. We will know soon enough.

#129 ·
I found this today. I have seen at least two other similar threads scattered across other C-7 forums. I had hoped that is was a very limited issue, but in seeing this I wonder? I'll put it up and let's hope nobody here has it happen to them. I'll try to see if anything in the way of a TSB, or anything else to help figure out what is going on to cause this problem.
"Has anyone heard of the C7 having issues with spun rod bearings? This has happened to mine supposedly and one other at the Hennessey facility. One of the clients c7 prior to modification, and one (mine) after modification. They tell me it is a GM/Factory flaw and they expect a recall eventually on the problem."

#130 ·
If they are at Hennessey having engine modifications done, how is this a GM/Factory flaw? I don't see it that way.
