Whenever I have a conversation with anyone about the Stingray I plan to purchase it always deteriorates into some variety of "you must be rich". It's to the point where I am almost embarrassed to say that I am purchasing the car to certain people. I wonder if they look at me like some rich snob.

News flash: I'M NOT RICH!

Just working hard and saving my *** off to afford this car that I have dreamed of owning for the last 30 years. If that defines me as rich then so be it.

Needed to get that off my chest.

Its a matter of personal priorities. Years ago, I knew a young couple with a Corvette who lived in a trailer home, with the car parked in front. This provoked much discussion in their small town. They did not particularly care about the home because they had no kids, a parent provided space the farm field that the trailer was in, and, "they weren't home all that much".

Ah, now I remember one thing I don't miss about where I grew up: everyone knew everyone, and everyone made everything their business even when it wasn't.

Rich is all relative. Anyone able to afford a $60k+ Vette is probably considered rich to the typical hourly employee. However, in most people's eyes, the top 1% are considered rich. Household income of $500k+ and/or net worth of about $7.5M+.

:D If this is your first Vette, get used to it. I've been hearing it for years. The last time I heard it was from a co-worker that was driving his new $60K Ram 3500 dually. Go figure. It's just a stigma that comes with the car, and the comments will roll off your back like water off a duck in no time.

Now i know why corvette clubs are so popular. If we're all hanging out with one another, we don't get this silly question! Right? :D

I have a beautiful wife, beautiful kids, and a beautifully gorgeous grandbaby, I'm rich in life and that is ALL that counts.

The hurt caused by being accused of being rich is a pain that never subsides*.

Me too! (Except the grand baby - I have 3 girls in college). I love my rich life! Financially strapped, but a great, rich life.

Been dealing with this since I was 18 and purchased my first Porsche. Never mind that it was a beat up 914, it said Porsche on the back, people equated that to spoiled rich kid. I learned at a young age to ignore what people thought or better yet, find new friends......

Yep I was surprised at a few friends that looked down at me because I made the personal decision that I could afford a corvette.
I have done the correct things in life worked hard spent less than I earned so that I saved for retirement. I'm about 8 years away from retirement which I have well planned out. I sacrificed earlier in life to allow me to be in the monetary positron that I am in now. But that's not anyone else's business. My true wealth is not in my dollars but that I have a great family three wonderful adult children contributing to society and so far one fantastic grandchild.

I am rich because I cultivated a strong family relationship and that makes me very proud.

My family is what's made me rich, my bank account is what it is because I made good decisions versus spending every dime and them some.

Sorry rant over now!

I get crap about the cost of my C7 from some of my friends and acquaintances. My response goes like this; have you looked at the MSRP on the new Tahoe and Suburban LTZ? Some say yes and some say no. Regardless, I remind them that the fully loaded Tahoe or Suburban MSRP is more than my C7.

That is pretty much the end of that conversation...

Sadly, it is the way it is.

In no way do I consider myself rich. Comfortable, with a boat, nice house, summer home, nice cars...done well compared to my parents and siblings, yada yada yada.. but not rich! A long time ago (I'm a geezer now) I started the habit of low balling the "what did that cost?" questions, never discuss my income or net worth, and never ever try to make myself appear "better" than those around me. On occasion I have admitted I am fortunate and very thankful for the breaks I have been given. Be humble, sensitive to others, and make no apologizes for the sacrifices you have made to achieve what you have achieved. Within reason, be there for your extended family when truly needed and deserved. Often, being there is not merely money, but also wisdom and support. Do the right things for the right reasons...and to hell with anybody that feels the need to take pot shots at you. Unless you asked them to pay for your Corvette, it is not of their concern that you enjoy owning and driving a nice car. Sometimes thick skin is the best solution.

Since I've never smoked I tell them I bought the 'Vette with my cigarette money...and have lots left over

I showed my granddaughters friend why smoking is a bad idea for financial reasons not just health concerns.
Used online calculator to show her that 1 pack / day @ $5.00 a pack over 40 years cost of cigarettes and lost opportunity (assuming money would be saved and invested) came out to over $340,000.00 **

** assumes 30 packs / month @$5.00 = $150.00 / month and 6.5% investment return

I suppose it is meant as a compliment when the crazy neighbour lady next door calls the police and tells them she thinks I'm a drug dealer since otherwise how else could i afford that 150k car. The two constables were car guys and knew what it was I had in the driveway, not that it is anyone's business how much money I have or how I spend it.
