Upgrade 1LT Infotainment Center?

1253 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  4mula1
I have never owned a Vette before and I'm buying a 2014 Stingray convertible with 1LT trim. Is there any reason why I should not upgrade the infotainment center to aftermarket with wireless CarPlay?

Welcome to our forum. If everything else about the potential C7 is exactly what you want and in satisfactory condition, its a viable modification. If you use the Search Community function on this at the top (and every page) you should be able to find posts of other members who have done the same.

The units Infotainment markets will effectively delete the exhaust select function. Other than that, they work well.
I would recommend professional installation unless you’re exceptionally limber.
With GM abandoning CarPlay for Android, I imagine many future owners are going to be looking for workarounds as well.

What is the “exhaust select function”?

I don’t know, can you send me a link?
What is the “exhaust select function”?
Corvettes with NPP (performance exhaust) have the ability to make the exhaust louder or quieter. That selection, and when it occurs, is controlled by the OEM infotainment display. There is a "mild to wild" product that can do the same, I think from the homelink buttons. There are other car-specific functions in the OEM infotainment unit which are 'lost' when replacing it with one of the Android units.

I was considering making this upgrade on my 2014 when I discovered the in-house GM GPS is a P.O.S., but gave up interest back then when the upgrade was around 2,000 bucks! And losing control over my exhaust settings as previously mentioned didn't appeal to me, after spending for the high performance exhaust.

Yep. I'm happy using my phone mounted in line of sight, and the running Kurviger or Google Maps.

After reading his post, I was thinking that would be the way to go.

I did the MVI Conversion on my 2014.......The MVI Apple Car Play Conversion website notes that 'Due to the difference in the Electronic Suspension Control Module change between 2014 to 2015 Model Years you will loose the onscreen touch control of the Drive and Exhaust Mode. You will, however, retain full control of the drive modes via the Multi Selection Rotary Knob on the center console. The Exhaust Sound will also continue to change modes with the knob selections as well ... 2014 Corvette Owners without the Z51 package or MRC and NPP Exhaust should not be affected."

Here is the thread link of when I did the conversion:

I received my package today from MVI who sells reprogrammed HMI and Radio Modules and installed my new 2016 HMI and Radio Module on my 2014 C7 which gave me the updates maps and CarPlay. The responsiveness and crispness of the infotainment screens is so much better and being able to mirror my phone and do other things is just what I wanted.

I choose MVI over Infotainment because it was a few hundred dollars less and if you send your old HMI back they will sell it and pay you about $200.

The install isn't bad overall but getting into the tight spaces on both passenger and driver sides is challenging to disconnect the new modules and takes some patience.

Level of difficulty of driver side 5/10 because steering wheel makes for awkward contortions of the body to see what you are doing to access things with your hands.

The passenger is a 7/10 because you need to remove unit from a plastic case housing and some pop loose easier that others but some people ended up breaking the plastic casing. I decided after considerable time to cut out the front part of the casing and walla I removed unit pretty easily. By cutting the bracket I assessed didn’t have any negative repercussions and it would still be secure when you put the the metal bracket back in place. Doing so takes this difficulty from a 7/10 to 5/10 in my opinion.

That said, I got it done yesterday and will take it for a drive today to make everything is well before I button everything back up.

Below is information about my purchase along with the post install picture screenshots.

All 2014 – 2015 Models Please Note:

If you currently have Factory NAV; you will need to select the I06 option. When upgrading to the CarPlay/Android Auto System you are changing out your existing NAV module and adding the newer 2.5 navigation module with the CarPlay / Android Auto built in. Please contact MVI for assistance in selling your old I06 MyLink Navigation System.

Features include:

  • 2016 CARPLAY / Android Auto Technology ( Apple /Google / Waze Mapping, texting, music, and other Carplay / Android Auto apps)
  • Retention of all factory features such as Performance Data Recorder ( PDR ), Drive Mode Selections / Magnetic Ride Control with PTM, Exhaust/Engine Sound Management ( NPP ), Rear Camera parking gridlines, HD Radio, Pandora, etc
  • Adds HD Radio if not already equipped
  • Activates Factory NAV Icon on the touch screen ( Purchase of I06 Upgrade above required )
  • Upgraded 2.5 Processor for overall faster and more responsive MyLink operating performance
  • O.E.M Mapping Software ( completely update-able through GM )
  • Enhanced Color Display with 2D or 3D mapping
  • Plug and Play Installation ( due to the nature of where the modules are located in the Corvette, this is an advanced time-consuming install )
  • All of our factory systems come with the latest MyLink software available, will add the weather/travel apps ( XM subscription required ), and will come with the latest updates and software fixes to help avoid any issues. This will save you from potential headaches of going to the dealer down the road. A tremendous value added feature which separates ourselves from the rest!
  • All of our factory systems come complete with everything you’ll need for your installation; including all harnessing, GPS antenna, a complete set of instructions, installation videos (if available), programming to your specific vehicle (no dealer involvement needed), and up to 15 minutes of technical support!
  • NOTE: Steering wheel controls will not work to Activate Siri or Google Voice when phone is plugged in for CarPlay and Android Auto. There is a voice activation button on the touchscreen or you can utilize ” Hey Siri ” or ” OK Google ” phone voice features and not touch anything. If you wish to have the steering wheel buttons retained for voice activation inside of CarPlay / Android Auto, you’ll need to call MVI to discuss the additional upgrade required to retain that feature. Steering wheel controls will function as they do currently when NOT plugged in and using CarPlay / Android Auto.

So after it's all said and done, what's the price tag on this project? I DON'T like their 'up to 15 minutes of tech support' limit. I really loathe these companies that require you to pay tech support for their own products. HP is one of those companies, I will never buy an HP printer again on account of this.
i upgraded the HMI 2.0 in my 2014 to HMI 2.5 so i could add Apple Carplay. Been almost 2 years now, have not had any issues with it. Cost around $800 and i did the install myself. I do not have Z51 or MRC, but i do have NPP and i change exhaust modes often using the Console Rotarty dial. i did not lose HD radio or SatNav with the upgrade.
