What does "625+" HP Mean?
The official Media.GM.com 1.14.14 press release stated,"The new, supercharged 6.2L engine is expected to deliver at least 625 horsepower."
GM's "Dealer Fact Sheet" listed, "625+ horsepower."
GM's Small Block Engine Program Manager Jordan Lee, in an interview also at that time, with enginelabs.com, stated, "We fully expect to beat that number, but we came up with a safe estimate for the [NAIAS]."
All are saying it will exceed 625HP, and similarly, that it will beat the announced 635 TQ.
Highly doubt that GM knows the exact numbers now, for not only are they doing engine and powertrain calibrations, but always looking over their shoulder to avoid the dreaded gas guzzler tax, and/or to get a "magic MPH" number. With a supercharger, upping or decreasing HP and TQ is as simple as re-sizing a pulley -- though we all know there are many other ways to also do that.
Can they get to 641 HP (beating the Viper) or more, still avoid the gas guzzler tax AND get 25 MPG highway? Again, do not think even GM knows these answers at this point, for so, so many variables are being calculated, adjusted and re-adjusted at this point. It took 'till roughly mid summer last year to come out with the official StingRay LT1 numbers, including the SAE confirmation of the testing procedures process. This year, with the Z06's delayed to approximately "the end of 2014" production start, we probably will not know the Z06's official/final HP & TQ numbers until the fall.
However, can not get the following statement out of my head, as I wonder what the Z06's final HP & TQ numbers will be, the statement made by Tadge Juechter, quoted in the March issue of "Automobile" magazine, and reacting to the magazine's comment to him during that interview that both the 625 & 635 numbers are a "plus," Tadge said,
"Those numbers aren't final, but you can put 'a big emphasis' on the 'plus'."
Betting on the HP number being at least 641, and the TQ being at least 630. Go Tadge and Team!
