Have finally started working on mounting my radar detector (I know this isn't the right place for that, and will post in the detector thread, with photos, after finishing).
When I was looking over the 'island' (don't know what else to call it?) that the inside rear view mirror is mounted on) to see what could be done to mount the detector, noticed a tiny hole on the passenger side behind the mirror. Since I was looking at mounting the detector RIGHT there, I was worried about blocking something important. Looking around, I found the large opening on the front of the island (which I'd seen from the outside of the car before). I thought it was for a light sensor or something previously. Curiosity got the better of me (and since I wanted to mount the detector to the island anyway - hidden in the 'shadow' of the mirror), so I went ahead and pulled that whole front island cover off (four press in clips). To my surprise, there was NOTHING in that large opening!!! ... and nothing above that small hole I'd found in the island!

SO... WHAT THE HECK GOES IN THAT OPENING????? Is it something that comes with the 3LT option? (mine is 2LT) Or is it something that Chevrolet has provided for that comes on a future option? Is this where the forward camera that I thought I read about will be going?

Do any forum members have anything in there???????? If you shine a light from outside the car (in a darker place, like in a garage), you can see into the opening.

Here's a photo of the opening, with the front 'island' cover removed. The wire sticking out of the opening is my detector 'smart' power cord.

My guess is that's where the PDR, Performance Data Recorder, camera will mount. Obviously the PDR has been in development for quite some time so they cast the molding above the mirror to house it from the beginning.

Now that I examine my own photograph more closely... I wonder if there's room to gut that 'island' space, and put the detector completely inside that front cover? Waiting for the Helms service manual... to see what else is in the bowels of that shoe box. The detector is mounted... and smart cord run to passenger side floor. Just need to attach to power source (thinking about splicing into the wiring for the flip accessory power port in the console), then will post everything in the detector thread.
