A8 Quirk

My 2016 A8 Z06 has always been quite reliable with few problems in 22,000 miles. However, it has one quirk: When the car is started cold in the morning, I back out of my short driveway and drive off. The first time the trans shifts from first to second there is an abnormally long (1-2 seconds) delay in the trans shifting into second gear. By the second time it needs to do the 1-2 shift, it is fairly normal then the rest of the day it is fine. Happens whether in Drive or Manual. Car is set with the trans in Tour mode; haven't tried it in Sport but will soon. So I am curious: does anyone else have this little quirk? It is not something that really bothers me, nor is it getting worse, so I have never felt the need for any professional diagnosis or repair. Alternatively, anyone have any idea why this might occur? Inquiring minds want to know....--Bob

It may be related to the TSB for transmission flush. See TSB Seems To Fix 8-Speed Automatic GM Transmission Problems
Jeff, I had the triple flush for the trans shudder done in 2019 and it seemed to improve that condition. But I don't recall noticing my delayed first 1-2 shift until sometime last year. As I say, not a big worry but curious if anyone has noticed it. I may talk to a couple of local Corvette techs at my two closest dealer to see what they have seen. --Bob

I did try it today set in Sport but the effect was the same. Delay in first 1-2 upshift then normal after that. Will keep asking folks to see what I find out.--Bob

Bob, it might be as simple as a software adjustment. A few years ago, my transmission was making a clunky noise and there was a delay during down shifts. It was solved by reprogamming the transmission control module.

I still have an intermittent delay when shifting from park to drive or reverse. This delay only happens when the engine is cold and it lasts about two seconds. According to a TSB, GM doesn't consider this a problem unless the delay is longer than three seconds.

The A8 will never be inducted into the Transmission Hall of Fame. ☹

Thanks Paul--I will ask my dealer about that. I tried the test in Sport yesterday morning but had the same result: a 1-2 second delay in the first 1-2 shift, then normal responses by at least trhe third time. As I noted, it is not a critical item so I will keep poking around on it. If I am at my dealer I will ask about it. Thanks for the ideas. --Bob

Bob, I never drive in D, so I can only comment on what happens in M-mode.

I get a hard kick on 1-2 the first time I drive it after it is cold, unless I shift quickly at very low speed and RPMs.

There is no delay, but, when it happens, the kick is so hard it makes me wish I had remembered to shift sooner.

Yeah Rodney I sometimes get a bit of that too. Maybe the issues are related. Hope to find out sometime in the near future. --Bob

I've had the torque converter replaced and the triple flush and fill done to correct the shutter problem, which it did. However the first 1-2 shift of the day is a rough one. It is like it is stuck in first and cannot figure out what to do. After the first one, it gets better and then eventually nearly seamless.

Hi
What does the A 8 mean? I have two vettes a 81 and a 2014 3Lt but I really know little other than starting them and I drive very gingerly cause if four hip replacements on my right hip
I detail the heck out of them and they look like show ready, never took them to shows but I have been learning a lot being part of this form, thank you to all that have such wonderful knowledge
I do have a best friend that owns Richards Corvettes that restores here in SC if not for him I would be a lot more ignorant
Thanks again for your knowledge.

A8 refers to the eight speed automatic transmission.

My 2016 Z51 A8 acts just as others have discussed here. I had the TSB flush done and it helped with the shudder, but not the cold shift delay/search. As discussed, it happens once when cold and shifting from 1st to 2nd, then it's normal (or what you would expect how an auto would/should shift). I'm not sure if this was always happening since I drove it home from the NCM in October 2015, but it's definitely happening now (with 4,800 miles on it). Still waiting for that call from Mike Furman regarding my C8 deposit placed in December 2020 (I know, I was told 12 months or more wait at that time). so, it looks like I'm waiting on a 2022 (maybe).
