I lost one of my key FOB’s. Ordered a replacement online, then tried to program it to pair it to my 2015 C7 A8. I followed these directions in the Owner’s manual:

**********
How to program:
Programming with a Recognized Transmitter
A new transmitter can be programmed to the vehicle when there is one recognized transmitter.
1. The vehicle must be off and both the recognized and new transmitters must be with you.
2. Remove key base from recognized RKE transmitter.

3. Place the recognized transmitter in the cupholder.

4. Insert the vehicle key into the key cylinder above the license plate.

5. Open the hatch/trunk.

6. Turn the key five times within ten seconds.

7. The DIC displays READY FOR REMOTE # 3or4, up to 8.

8. Place the new transmitter in the steering column transmitter pocket with the buttons facing up and the base toward the opening facing the passenger side.

9. Press the ENGINE START/ STOP button.

10.The DIC displays READY FOR REMOTE # 4 or 5, up to 8.

11.Press Unlock on each newly programmed transmitter to complete the process.

12. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 8-11. Press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds if programming is complete.
Return the key base back into the RKE transmitter.

However I am only able to get thru #6. #7 "DIC displays Ready for Remote” does not appear on DIC, it just remains blank.
My selling dealer said when this occurs, it might require a visit to the dealer to hook the car up to their computer.
Any suggestions to save a trip to the dealer?

Sorry Ron, for I am not smart in this area. Is if possible that the dealer ordered a FOB that is incompatible for your VIN (for I know that many parts now are VIN specific)? Do not even know if there is more than one FOB part #, just asking...

Hopefully someone smart in this area might come up with a specific suggestion(s) to help you.

Ron, suggest you try the instructions in your manual that follow the set you have quoted in your post, for "Programming without a Recognized Transmitter" and see if that will work for you. If not, possibly you obtained a non-OEM replacement key FOB or will have to make the trip to your dealer. Best of luck!

Unfortunately, I only got to step #6 which only uses my remaining old original FOB. I never got to step #8 which introduces the new FOB to the car and the programing of the new FOB so I can't tell if the new FOB is compatible. I didn't mention in my original post, but step #6 triggered the alarm so the car thought I was a thief and shut down everything, but it recovered after one hour and the car behaves normally using the original FOB. I'll go see a local dealer as my selling dealer in Montana said it probably needs a reboot. Oh well, it just forces me to play another round of golf while I leave the car at the dealer : )

But the other set of instructions do the programming without the use of a viable FOB present. Worth a try...on the other hand, go enjoy the golf (and give me a shout next time in Vegas and we'll do a round :) ).

Jeff, I looked at the procedure of programming without a recognized transmitter and step 7 makes me weary. It wipes out all previous transmitters, which includes the one and only FOB that works. If something goes wrong, I'm left with no way to start the car!

"7. Repeat Step 7 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining transmitters can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE #1."

I like my odds of playing golf and going to the dealer better! I will definitely call you next time in Vegas.

I finally had time to go to the dealer and have them re-program my replacement key FOB. I bought the replacement FOB from eBay for $89. It included a new uncut metal key. The vendor said the FOB was a reconditioned unit that had been flashed to "virgin" condition. Dealer charged $95 to pair it to my car and to cut the metal key. Works perfect now and I'm back to two keys.
