I found this simple, black aluminum frame on Amazon. I don't remember the vendor, but it was in the under $20 range and came with a large assortment of screws and caps.

Norm, that's a great plate, I'm assuming it's an old one. What hoops, if any, do you have to go through to use it?

DE has unique plates unlike those of other states. Besides the organizational plates like other states (retired military, FOP, Lions, KofC, colleges, etc.) DE has a few nostalgic plates that are legal but not issued. The plate is not issued, only the number is. It is up to the registered owner to secure the nostalgic plate through a handful of state authorized plate makers that do charge a premium.

DE folks are also nuts for low digit numbers. A few years back, I believe the number 6 was auctioned off for 3/4 million $. Nuts, right? Numbers 1 thru 5 belong to gov't positions (guv, etc.) and numbers are not retired, they can be passed down to family members.

Every quarter, the DMV will purge numbers that have not been renewed, all the state resident has to do is call in and request a low number from the purged list. The number itself determines the style plate you can adorn your car with, the small black & white porcelain plate or the next size up stainless steel style plate. I have both, I just switch off at my pleasure.

No matter what number you have, you can still get the standard issued gold on blue plate. For a black and white plate, the number can go up to 87,000. For a SS plate, number can go up to 200,000. There is a one time change of registration fee to change out numbers.

The small black and white plate is actually porcelain baked. The SS plate, like mine showing in a previous post, the numbers are individual and are actually tac welded on.

I may not have touched on all the nuances of DE plates, it is unusual.

Porcelain plate against a standard size issued plate.

I decided to buy an outer frame, just to add a finished edge for the plate in chrome. Found this at Autozone:

I still need to find some chrome "buttons" to cover the bottom holes.

As I understand it, the license plate frames that will most surely get you stopped are the ones that extend so far down the top that they obscure the state name.

I considered having some custom frame made, but I like the tacit statement of: "This is my car, and this is the best view you are likely to have of it.", rather than providing other information about displacement, hp or induction system.

I use this simple perimeter frame as SC does not allow any part of any letter or number to be covered-including the State Name.

To cover the bottom holes I just used small screws to attach plastic caps, only to the plate and holder-no screw into the Vette. In my case I painted the plastic cap. They come in black or chrome. Found at AutoZone.

For my Grand Sport picked this custom plate as tribute to Zora Duntov who had the first Grand a Sports built.
