I've heard rumors that certain states will ticket drivers if the plate bracket covers up information on the plate. Is there any truth to this?
Registration sticker has to be displayed clearly in my state (WV). I was doing some off-roading with some friends in my truck and was pulled over afterwards by a policeman in a small town in MD. He made me get out of my truck and clean off my sticker to validate my tag. Sent me on my way with no ticket. Guess it was just an opportunity to scrutinize an out of state vehicle.

I like the "finished" look having a license frame provides, covering the edges of the plate itself. The issue I am seeing is that many decorative license plate frames have "broad" frame edges which tend to cover over part, sometimes half, of the registration "month and year" stickers on the bottom left and right of the license plate. Hence, I am going with this, and painting it carbon flash black to match the rear fascia -- though a complimentary or body-colored rear license frame looks great also. Inexpensive @ Amazon, though probably available almost everywhere.

Someone on here from South Carolina went to great lengths to make sure he did not cover any part of his plate for exactly this reason.

It's used as an excuse to stop cars and look for alcohol and dope
Exactly what they do on I95 near the intersection with Rt 20 in SC! Often have 4 or 5 unmarked SUV's with a drug dog and an enclosed spot to have you "pee!" Not only an excuse to stop you, it gets them $125 ticket each time! Even a clear platic cover will get you a ticket! They have been giving tickets in Myrtle Beach to out-of-staters as well! The SC law says "no part of any letter or number can be covered!" Changed my plate holder to the one pictured! Note, the law does allow a decal, "If it does not cover any part of any letter or letter." That is how my C7 flags are allowed! That is actually a lapel pin with the clasp removed and attached with outdoor double sided tape!

My wife just got me this for Christmas! I'm so excited it'll look great with my Laguna Blue
Nice Brent, but a little early to be opening up the Christmas bounty. ;)

I have seen police in NY threaten to ticket a friend over his plate frame. Made him remove it on the spot. If I recall, it probably had some reference to beer or the likes, at a time when M.A.D.D. was blowing up big time (early 80's). That and I am sure this guy started "fast-talking" and the cop was making it clear who was in charge.

What are you guys using? Just got my tag today and want something nice to frame the plate. Lots of options for C6 and earlier, perfer something black to match the black wheels/Laguna blue.

Depends on your state or if you plan to come thru SC! The law states, "no part of any plate number or letter can be covered!" That means even partically covered! Its $125 fine and gives them a reason to check your car. If they or a drug dog even gets a hint of drugs they may strip your car! Don’t really want SC to have too many C7’s! Have a friend who often is on a 5 car (usually all blacked out SUV’s) that do stop cars for drug checks! On the spot they have a facility to make urine checks! They are usually on I95. At Myrtle Beach they were giving tickets to many out or state cars!
Changed to a frameless plate holder for that reason.

Had to improvise. Bought the brackets from Amazon for $8. I like them because they come with a clear plastic cover + on the bottom of the bracket they have 2 tabs that keep the plate and plastic tucked in tight to the frame

My front is just a simple black frame. This is the rear on my 'vert:

JerryU - As I'm looking at these two pictures of your plate, is that top one illegal in SC? It doesn't look like it would be as it don't seem to cover any letters or numbers on the plate...or am I missing something?? I like that it does cover the bolt holes on the plate and the fasteners. Nice clean look.

That top frame was legal but was an inexpensive fake carbon fiber look plastic frame I was testing to see if I wanted to spend ~$70 for a rear carbon fiber frame. Decided could not really see the carbon fiber when mounted on the painted carbon flash background.

Bought the black metal perimeter black frame at AutoZone for ~$8. Thought I might spray paint it carbon flash but when it was mounted it blended so well didn't bother. Removed from the 2014 when it was sold and will install on the Grand Sport on order.

Covered the screws (and screw holes on the bottom) with plastic caps, also available at AutoZone, etc. Painted them to match the colors on the SC custom plate. SC must have a lot of old design plate blanks since it's been ~5 years that we changed to a better looking plate design but custom plates still get that old one!

I don't think the personalized ones for SC have changed in 26 years. I have one that I no longer use on car that has the year 91 printed on the tag. Wish they would just use the same background as the latest design tag.

I used carbon flash. Got it from the dealer as a GM option. charlie
